(By Tcleeriph.—Special Correspondent.) Palmerston, April 24. s After raining heavily all day yesterday 5 and last night, the weather ' cleared a I little this morning, and. the Manawatu Racing Club decided to go on with tho meeting. After three events had been got off in fine weather, light vain come on P again, and, when thij big race was over, i it. simply poured, causing many to leave tho course. The last two events were , urn in heavy vain, and the racing was [J completely spoilt. Everything considered, , however, the attendance was good, and ' tho totalisator returns especially so. Sir ' Geo. Clifford only started two horses— Atirunimif and ■■•Ilentherbrße—both of ' whom were successful. ■, There were five defections from the' { Kiircre Hurdles, leaving eight runners. Tho betting was solid, and six of the I runners were well backed. Tyrannic, as I usual, acted the part of pacemaker, but the field had him in trouble half a mile from home. Passing the stand the first ' time Tyrannic and Golden Water led. ' with Ambrosian last, but the Insl-named 1 moved up into third position down (he ' back. At the half-mile Waterworks went ' to tho front, but, across tho bottom, Am- ' brosian challenged him, and had comI mand at the straight. Sho jumped the 1 last; fence better than the previous one, ' and won comfortably. Gold Bird ran : 1 "ood race, and got third. Silva was dis- ) appointing, but ho is generally a better I hor-f> with a race into him. C. Price I rode tho winner, and is now at the head ) iof the list of winning riders over fences.

The Apprentices' Plato was a failure, and not wico'urnßinß to the club. Half oi the bovs who had mounts seemed to have no idea- how to control (hem. Muster Achilles jumped out in front, and should inve won, but his rider could not do him justice, and tho more experienced AVeller. on Miss Vena, lvon by :i nose. Cicncral Mad'ero was a louk way back third. After ."'oing a furluiig, Asternoun fell, and over him came and MotU:.do. C. Carmont, an apprentice attached to A. Hall's stables had his collarbone broken, and the other riders were stunned. Negative had a runaway victory in the Welter Handicap, being suited admirably by the heavy going. He took churn at sis furlonss, a"'' won very easily, l'lantidou had to be ridden out to Ijeat Turna or second money. Queen of Scots and Matlow , were the next to hmsli. Lomposed ran well to the turn, bnt then retired, mid jiniuiiM Bov alter showins; ill) well, t'ot Kultk lo last at the "back of the ,0.11-0. and lmd his chances destroyed. There were seven runners in the Stakes— ;111 unexpectedly gom! lield-aiitl the preliminaries were eagerly wnHied. Krmeii'..irde l«oke<l and well, and <o did Tntomn.is. while the Auckland en t, Princ? part in the race. Ermeiignrde, on the outside, soon ran to the front with Knngialua and Autumnus together next, just clear of Prince Soult and Evadnc, l'arewanni being tailed oil'. Autumnus got fleai , of Uangiafua across the bottom bend, where Prince Soull also passed him, Ahoiil lOfl yards oil . Hie post Autumnus had (he measure of l-lnnongnrde, and won decisively. Prince Soult was eased when il was found lie had no chance, lie was well clear of the others in third place. Rangiatua. Kvadnc, and Parr-wauui followed in that order.

Merrimac was made favourite in a big field in the Hack Welter Handicap, and he won after a close finish, wilh Morning a rank outsider. The unlucky horse of the nice, was Moahnii, who got away Inst, and then, after giving the lcmli'i's' a big start of fully thirty lengths, he ran home in third place. Elfish drew a bad position at the barrier, but he ran a good race under his big load, as also did (llahii.

Considering tho going the big race was a fast one, tho pace being on the whole way. There was some delay at Ihe start, from which Mira was the- first to move, but was quickly superseded bv' Boanerges and Lady Mniilon. The favourites carried on the running together till well into the straight, whero Mnl K a Hill took charge. Half-way down the running, however, he was ehalleneed by Manawakaha. and, in a clos-s finish, the loiter just squeezed home. Honnergc.,'was third, and Coramamlel and Lady Mouloa next. Mira put in a great run to tho turn, where, however, he. faded out of it. Golden Loop and The Rover were the last to finish.

An outsider in Mallard scored in the Hack Flying Handicap, after an interesting race. At tho start Distinction was left, but he quickly ran up to the leaders, and, across the bottom, was in behind Lady Volga an.l Mount Victoria. -Miss Roberts came fast at the. entrance to tho straight. l;ut failed to sustain her run, and Mallard, finishing well, won nicely from Mount. Victoria and Lady Volga*. Distinction was fourth, and, considering that, he had been left, his performance was a good one. Monloa Girl fell soon after the start.

Scralcliiiijjs reduced the field in thn Telegraph Handicap to six. runners, and Heatherbrao clo'ed up favourite, but good backing was also accorded Hermiii and Gladiole. The lnlter was first off, and led a bunched field at. a merry pace. At the turn, Hcatlicrljrap came fast on the outside, and, outstaying the others, won easily. Men Ami was clear of Hermia. Gladiole stopped to nothing and finished last.
