John Edward Tinkler, a clergyman's son, has been sentenced to three years' penal servitude on a charge of stealing boobs from Peterborough Cathedral. It was shown that accused had been previously convicted. The evidence showed that Tinkler was a-confirmed book tliief, and had confederates in New York and London. [The thefts wel> carried on systematically from January, 1901, to June, 1909. The" loss was known some time in 1010, when it was ascertained that the uiis.-hip: books and pamphlets numbered more than 200. They were for the most part fir=t or early editions of well-known works, and nearly, all of them very rare.
