Palmerston N., April 22. An old settlor nnd n well-known contractor of Palinersfon, Mr. Herbert Thomas, died, in the hospital this morning, aged 55 years. Pneumonia was tho cause of death.

Hie ralmerston Licensed Victuallers' Association has given a valuable trophy for competition at the Mnnuwatu Poultry Association's annual exhibition, which is to bo held iu connection with tho A. and P. Society's Winter Show. Mr. J. Henley, who has occupied tho position of coaching foreman at tho Pnlinorston North railway station for tho past twenty years, has retired on superannuation.

Ihe Manawatu Mounted Pities held a daylight parade at tho Hokowhitu Unngo on Saturday afternoon. Lieut. W. Of. C. Smith was in command.

On Saturday evening a pleasant function was held in tho boys rooui n,t tho A'.M.C.A., when a social was tendered to the senior boys' cricket team, in honour of their having won tho championship in tho AYellinirton Boys' Cricket League. Mr. AValton tool; the chair, and in his remarks emphasised that the boys should endeavour to play the game of life in just as sportsmanlike, way as they had played during tho cricket season. ' During tho evening Dr. Izard, tho president of the AVcllington Boys' Cricket League, presented tho trophies'. Tho cantaiu of tho team was. presented with the cup donated to the league by his Excellency tho Governor. Each player in the winning team received a silver medal. Medals were also awarded to tho champion bowler and batsman. Mr. Eglin. on behalf of the winning team, presented Mr. Bruce Mabin with a handsome little clock, as a token of the appreciation of the interest he took in the team in coaching and looking after its affairs generally. Mr. Mabin replied in suitable words..
