REPORTED SUICIDE DENIED, BRAVELY 'ASSISTS PASSENGERS IN THE WATER. (Eoc. April 21, 5.5 p.m.) New York, April 20. The report that the.Captain nnd chief engineer of ■'the Titanic committed suicido emanated from a demented passenger. All the narratives commend tho Captain's heroism, but there is some diversity as to how- ha died. Some of the survivors state that ho wns literally washed from bis post. ■ When the boats were clear of the ship, the Captain said: "Men, you've done your full duty. You can do no more. It's every man for himself now!" Before the Titanic sank, the Captain megaphoned to the mass of men on deck: "Be British!" Later on ho was seen helping thoso struggling in the water, and refused any opportunity to savo himself. Mrs. Georgo Widener, whoso husband antl son were drowned, states that she saw Captain Smith jump from tho bridge into those.i. A moment previously she saw another r.fficer commit suicido by firing ii bullet into his brain. Mr. Braden, a passenger, Enid the Captain was stauding alone once, when a wave upset him. Then m the boat sank another wave knocked him down, and he disappeared. ■ Other account? state that the Captain jumped overboard when tho decks were awash. Revolver shots wero heard prior to his sinking. Rumours have been published that some of tho officers committed suicide, and that the crew acted with discredit.
