CLAN OGILVY CRAWLS INTO PORT, SIUFT DAMAGED. Once again tho value of wireless telegraphy has been demonstrated, this time regarding a vessel in distress off our own const. The benefit of wireless is fresh in tho minds ofllio public in regard to the Titanic disaster.

At L , p.m. Un .Saturday Mr. G. H. Scales, local agent j m - t] lc flan Liuo of slcamei-5, received an ethergram from tho Jloaiu, jymcli was en route from Wellington to •Sydney, staling that tho Clan liner Clan !i B 'i Vy i I K ' on f P o lttu, and reported tliat she hnd sustained damage to her sin t, ami (], at K | lß Wlvs p rocoedin g t0 Wellington under her own steam. lesterday morning the vessel was observed coming slowly through Cook Strait, find at 11..i0 a.m. UlO Union Company's tug lerawhiti left tho wharf, and went out with tho object of offering assistant* to tho lame duck." Tht, tug went well out into the Strait, round Sinclair Head, but apparently was not needed, because she returned to port at 5.20 p.m. When Hearing the, Heads, f.ho Clan Ogilvy signalled for ft pilot, and Caplaiu Hayward went out and brought her into port, tho nnchorago being reached at 7 p.m.

On Saturday, April 13, the Clan Ogilvj, having finished discharge, of her cargo of Newcastle coal at Dunedin, left that port for A'eirenstle. She passed Capo Cninpbell at 3.30 p.m. on Sunday, having made, a run of 300 miles up the coast in the smart time of 25 hours.

All wont well until the vessel was 400 miles west of Farewell 'Spit ou Tuesday last. At that time tho weather was modorate, when all of a sudden something went wrong in tho engineroom. On investigation it was found that tho intermediate shaft had been damaged to a considerable extent. Tho captain (Captain Swanston), officers, engineers, and all hands set to work to effect temporary repairs, and on Thursday tho task was accomplished. Their work was of a etroniious nature, tlio shaft being badly buckled and some of tho bearings being knucked out of line. However, when, everything was ready a turn was taken out of , the engines, and things worked fairly entiefaclorily.

Captain Swanston decided to make for Wellington, and tho Clan Ogilvy managed to crawl along at about five knots an hour, port being made in safety. From the timo of the mishap until the vessel arrived at Wellington fino westerly wenther was experienced.

Permanent repairs are to be effected at Wellington, nnd it is probable that a start will bo made to-day.
