CITY MAYORALTY.
THE CANDIDATES
MR. BISS AT BROOKLYN. Mr. A. S. Diss had a good attendance at his meeting at Brooklyn last evening. Mr. Bates presided. Mr. Biss pointed out 'that when tho City Council had had under consideration tho extension of tho electric tramway service to Melroso tho then Mayor (Mr. T. llislop) had tusked him. to report as to how a proposed special rato to cover any shortage should bo assessed, ami after going into the question he had reported that it would not be fair to differentiate, as even though tho Melrose lilies might show deficiencies tho residents in the suburb would also lie contributing <o tho revenue of tho whole system by using tho city lines during business hours. On that ground ho had advised that all receipts should be pooled. That recommendation had been adopted. Mr. Biss continued to address tho elecI tors much on tho lilies taken by him in I his speeches, at the Druids' Hall and elsewhere. At the conclusion of his address ho was given a vote of thanks and confidence. To-night Mr. Biss will speak at Brighton House, Kilbirnie, at 7.30. MR. WRIGHT AT ARO STREET. Mr, R. A. ~\\ right addressed tho electors at Aro Street last evening. He deprecated introducing any class question into tho contest. To his mind the man to occupy the Mayoral chair was 0110 who would represent all classes of the community. He claimed that if returned he would represent tho Labour interests as well as those of any other section of the citizens of Wellington. He had been careful all through the campaign to make no rash promises, and whilst in favour of municipalization generally, he was opposed to "wild cat" experiments. He had heard it said that train fares should bo reduced. Ho held that tho tramwavs must pay their way, and they were only doing that at the present time. With a profit of only ,£SOOO on an undertaking the capital cost of which was <£619,444, they could not be said to bo making what any business mull would say was a working profit. The margin was a very narrow one at present, and the making of any further concessions would bo hazardous. Referring to the engagement of employees in the corporation, he thought that appointments should only be made on the score of merit and efficiency. Ho made no reflection on tho present council in that regard, but it was a principle to bo safeguarded. Referring to recreation grounds, Mr. Wright said that he liad taken part with others in advocating the provision of a breathing space at Nairn Street, where there was a good opportunity of making a fine recreation ground. The matter was now being considered, and would no doubt in the near future be an accomplished fact. This evening Mr. Wright will 6peak in Ingestre Street at 7.30 o'clock, and at the Hataitai Bowling Club's pavilion at 8.45 o'clock. Supporters of Mr. John Smith are invited to meet him at the Chamber of Commerco at 5 p.m. this day. Mr. John Smith, < candidate for tho city Mayoralty, will address the electors at the Newtown Library at 8 o'clock tonight, and at tho Hataitai Bowling Pavilion at 9 o'clock to-night. Mr. R. A. Wright, a candidate for tho city Mayoralty, will address the electors at 7.30 to-night, at tho corner of Ingestro Street. Mr. A. S. Biss will address the electors at 7.30 o'clock to-night at Brighton' Houso, Kilbirnie. A number of Mr. Wright's supporters met last' night at Mr. Castle's rooms, Riddiford Street, and arranged for an energetic campaign, with a view to placing Mr. Wright at the top of tho poll.
Mr. W. Ilobbs, candidate for the Eastbourne Mayoralty, will hold a meeting at the Eastbourno Hall at 8 p.m. on April
