"DOWN WITH CONSCRIPTION!"
PASSIVE RESISTER FINED. (By Telegraph.—Press Association.) Auckland, March 28. A young man who wore the badge ot tho "Passive Resistors' Union" and discoursed glibly but rather poifitlcssly on tho right of free speech, was charged at Uio Police Court tills morning that on February 7 ho published a paper headed "Down Willi Conscription," on which tho name and place of the printer were not printed. The accused pleaded not guilty, but when informed that distributing n circular meant, in terms of the Act, "publishing" it, ho admitted tho offence. His Worship said ho was sorry tho provisions of tho Act were bo drastic, as the olYonco v;os committed in ignorance. Tho Act provided for a minimum fine of £5 and a maximum of .£2O. Tho printer was the person to blame, and ho undoubtedly knew (ho Act, and left the imprint out to shield himself from proceedings under tho Defence Act. A minimum fine of X 5 and costs would be imposed.
