MAINE VICTIMS BURIED.
Br Telecrapb—Press Assooli'itlen—OoprrighJ (Hec. March 25, 0.55 a.m.) New York, March 24. 'The bodies'of the Maine victims havo been, buried in the Arlington National Cemetery at Washington. The President, Mr. Taft, and members of the Cabinet were present at tho services, which were unusually impressive. "When the Maine was blown.up in Havana Harbour in 1898 it was the general belief that some Spaniard miscreants, presumably military men, had planted a mine "under it and destroyed with it the lives of 254 men. 'Remember the Maine , was tho angry cry; and while it did not cause tho war with Spain—for that wag inevitable—it did hasten it. Spain would not have yielded, nor would the United States. Spain had no fear of the.result of war, nor had America. But tho blowing up , of the Maine unified the 'American people and hastened tho result. Tho war followed quick, and quickly was the Spanish fleet swept oft the seas, and the United States made sure haste to divest Spain of all her colonies. Subsequent investigation has lent weight to tho theory that the vessel was sunk ' by an internal_ explosion, and that Spain was entirely innocent."
