(From Car 6»ecial Correspondent.) MAGISTRATE'S COURT. Dr. M'Arthur, S.M., presided _at the monthly sitting of the Petono Magistrate's Court yesterday morning. There were also on tho Bench Messrs. Chapman, Mothes, and Keir, Justices of the Peace. Daniel Breen appeared to answer two charges, ono of drunkenness and tho other of a breach of a prohibition order. On the first charge he was convicted. and discharged, whilo on tho second he was fined 4<)s., in default fourteen days' imprisonment. A. prohibition order was granted against John C. Chambers on the application of tho police. DRILLSHED DISTURBANCE. Arising out of a recent disturbance outside the Drillshed in Nelson Street, Bobert Nankivillo was charged with assaulting Ernest Hartley. In his evidence, Hartley Mated that on the night in question a' window in the hall was broken, and he went outside to investigate. Nankivillo immediately accused him of being an "informer," and after challenging him to fight, hit him in the face. There followed a fight between the two. Nankiville struck the first blow. Nankivillo stated that Hartley had accused him of breaking the window, and that that was tho cause of tho trouble. After much conflicting evidence was given, tho defendant was convicted and fined 205., in default seven days' imprisonment, Witnesses' expenses were allowed ' „ ..' L Nankivillo and Hartley wero then jointly charged with using threatening boiinviour. Both were convicted and discharged. OBSTRUCTING THE BOROUGH INSPECTOR, The borough inspector (Mr. W. B. Gough) proceeded against Robert Parrant for wilfully obstructing him in tho execution of his duties as health officer. Mr. It. C. Kirk appeared for tho inspector, and, after briefly slating the circumstances, lie said that tho' case was brought forward to indicate to tho public that tho inspector must not bo interfered with. Tho inspector stated that he had occasion to visit Parrant's premises on March 4,, and. after being' there for some time he was ordered out. Parrant said that he would have no borough officials hanging round his place. Gough refused to go immediately, and finally tho defendant took hold of him by the shoulders and put him out of the gate. Ho offered no resistance. John Jacobsen gave evidence that no saw Parrant put the inspector off tuo S( The 'defendant admitted that ho had ordered the inspector to go away, but not until he had given time for tho inspection to bo made. Ho used no violDr. M'Arthur said that the Bench was unanimously of the opinion tliat the inspector had made out a good case. Parrant was convicted, and ordered to pay Court costs (95.) and solicitor's fee and witness's expenses (£1 65.). Mr. Cracroft Wilson appeared for the defendant. OTHER CASES. Robert Parrant, M. Senior, and Robert Nankiville were charged with assembling on tho footpath in Nelson Street, and thus impeding traffic. The case against Parrant was dismissed. In the other two instances tho defendants wero convicted and discharged. "Take this as a warning," advised Dr. M'Arthur. The Truant Inspector (Mr. Dineon) prosecuted Joseph Do Postino in respect to the attendance of his child at school. Defendant was fined 4s„ with costs is, John Maxwell pleaded guilty to two charges of allowing stock to wander. Ho wns fined 55.-on each, with costs totalling 18« Similar fines for like, charges wero imposed upon Samuel Maxwell, Richard Conchmnn. and John Cameron. Alexander Hislop was mulcted in costs only (75.). CIVIL BUSINESS. In the following undefended civil cases judgment was entered for plaintifl by dofault :-J. Norman v. A. E. Norhng, 195.. costs 55.; T. Riddler v. H. Lockwood, .£32 25., costs £1 Bs. _, In. a judgment summons case. J. \\. M'Carthy was ordered to pay off a debt of'.£l3 10s. 6d. owing to R. Bv wav of celebrating St. Patrick's 1 Day tho'retono branch of the Hibernian Society held a monster social in the Palaco Theatre, on Tuesday evening.
