« HOSPITAL BOARD MEETS. (By Telegraph.—Special Correspondent.) Palmerston North, March 14. Tho Palmerston Hospital and Charitable Aid Board mot to-day, Mr. .1. G. Wilson presiding. Amongst the correspondence was a letter from Mrs. E. M. Carman, enclosing a donation and thanking the hospital staff for the kindness ami consideration received by her late husband while in the hospital. An application was received for the admission of an octogenarian to the Old ilea's Home. The report of (lie relieving officer was against the application, and instructions were given for a report to be prepared on the request. The Mayor reported that Mr. Alfrey, Government Inspector of Works, had rung him up just'before tho meeting and slated that the plans in connection with the proposed consumptive annexe for women at the hospital had been mislaid, but arrangements had been made with the Department to allow Mr. Alfrey to rome to Palmerston North to prepnre fresh plans. The relieving officer reported that there had been lately n peculiarly largo amount of disbursements for charitable aid purposes at Ashhurst. In that part of tho district during five weeks fifteen persons had been assisted at a cost of .£2 Is., as against four elsewhere, at a cost of lis. The matron reported that Nurse Crook had been promoted to the position of sister, and Probationers Taare, Sanders. Shere, and Mulgaard to the nositions of senior probationers. Misses M. E. Hardley, M. G. Ouinn, and M. ,T. E. llearfield have been placed on the list of thoso seeking employment as probationers. With regard to the statement in the Department's Teport: that the cost of maintenance of tho hospital lmdt increased by .£ls per bed, the chairman stated that this was to bo accounted for mainly by e.\nendilurc on the new surgery, dispensary, laundry, beds from England, increases of salaries, and various other augmented charges. They wcro keeping a watch on tho expenditure, but everything had been going up in price. In connection with the proposed Old Men's Home, the chairman stated that the estimated cost, .£4OOO. was rather Inch. Accommodation should be provided for twelve males and six females. It was decided that the chairman should visit Wellington nnd confer with Dr. Valintine with regard to the board's requirements in the matter, and report tothe executive. The relieving officer exnlained that a minimum of twentv-fivo Inmates was necessary, and he could find that number without any trouble. Tho chairman said that if this were the case they could not have a home erected at a cost less than ,£4OOO. Captain Haydon was granted six months' leave of absence in connection with his projected visit to England. At the installation of officers of the Masonic Lodge Huia yesterday, Bro. W. .T. Culver was presented with a secretary's jewel, in recognition of his services as secretary from the foundation of the lodge. The building np of the human framo was tho subject of an address given bv Captain-Surgeon Peach at the weekly drill of the Mounted Field Ambulance last night. The lecture was most instructive. At the Police Court this morning a man named Henry Conolly w'as sentenced to seven days' imprisonment on a charge of being an idle and disorderly person. The Huia Masonic, Lodge held its annual installation nnd investiture of officers yesterday afternoon, tho ceremony b'irg carried out by R.W. Bro. .las Moncrieff. D.G.M. Thero was a large gathering of the craft, and Bro. A. J. Graham was duly installed as master of the lodge. In the evening an "at home" was hold at the Municipal Hall, when there was a large gathering of Masons and their lady friends, and a fine programme of vocal and instrumental music, recitations, etc., was rendered, the evening proving most enjoyable. Tlie Stari'rßowkett Society of Palmerston held a drawing last night, the result being that Mrs. Harriett Humphries receives .f.'MO free of interest, and Mr. A. Jack ,£IOO under similar conditions. .... The Palmerston Swimming Club held a sports gathering yesterday afternoon, when there was a fair muster of tho public to. witness the various • events, which resulted as follow:—Ladies' Bracelet, 50 yards—Lambert, 1; Moore, 2. 220 Yards—Wiig, 1; Morrison, 2.
