4 ■-. J MOTOR-CAB SMASH- AT HASTINGS. (By' Telocranh—Press Association.) Hastings, March H. A serious motor accident occurred last night. Mr. Norman Wellwood's car, driven by tho owner, and carrying his friends, Mr. J. Holden, jun., and Mr. George Stevenson, was returning from the Napier .Park races, when it crashed into tho "Ilawke's Bay Tribune" cai', which was proceeding from Hastings to Fernhill. The "Tribune" car was driven by Mr. Whitlock, jun., and with him wero Mr. A. E. O'Meara and Mr. W. Cook, dentists, of Hastings. Tho drivers of both cars and Mr. ITolden were unhurt, but Mr. O'Meara has a compound fracture of the, left leg, and Mr. Cook a severely lacerated leg and an injured knee-cap. Both e'ero taken to the hospital, and will probably bo there for two months. Mr. Stevenson sustained a slight concussion, but was able to proceed home. Both rorß wero badly sir.nshed. This wa.s but one of a series of car accidents. Two collided on tho bridge at Pakipaki on Tuesday night. Ono was owned by Mr. Franklin and the other was driven by Martin Rophin. Both drivers were cut nbout, but not seriously injured. Three cars coming from the rapes last night were crossing the Pakowhai bridge, when the leading car stopped, and tho other two collided with it. No one was hurt, but tho cars were damaged.
