In conneetian with the accident to Conductor Gates, which occurred at Winder's Corner at 1128 p.m. on Wednesday, it appears that (.inlcs who was acting temporarily as dispatcher, boarded a tramcar to ascertain when the Scatoun car was drte. Mr. Gilbert Portcous (Miss Ethel living's husband) has a kindly word for Wellington, which ho considers not only the best show town in New Zealand, but also possesses the most encouraging and discriminating audiences. He was outspoken in his criticism. Auckland audiences, ho considered, were inclined to bo sluggish, owing possibly to its rather enervating climate in the summer months. Diuicdin people were quite impossible as audiences, at least, lie found them so, and modern comedy of a high standard well played was a fair test. Christchurch was better, but they took their pleasure in tho Cathedral "City rather sadly. There- was little life or spontaneity in their placid appreciation. In Wellington, however, the audiences were quite "alive." They saw the points quickly, and laughed without restraint where there was matter for laughter, and were silently attentive in the serious moments. They were, in a word, good audiences to piny to, and when they are so, he said, the' best that is in the players came out. No. 4 Field Ambulance Corps; now enenmped at Fort Dorset, is making good progress in squad drill. They have not as yet had much training in actual first aid'work, it being necessary to first instil into the recruit tho essence of military discipline. They have had practice ill camp sanitation, and have built a camp destructor which has been burning since they first pitched tents. Yesterday the' camp was inspected by Colonel .1. 1(. Furdy, N.Z.M.C, and ■Lieutenant-Colonel C. M'. Hegg. The Masterlon detachment of tho corps go out of camp to-day, tho rest following on Saturday. Tho senior officers in camp are Captain Holmes, Caplain Cook (Masterlon), Captain Cafbery (Stratford), and Captains Horty and Elliot. Detectives Hammond and Kemp arrested a man yesterday who will appear at the Magistrate's Court to-day c.harged with stealing £i 10s., the property of a local resident named Charles Wauters. The following steamers will bo within wireless distance this evening:—Ulimaroa, Moiina, Winimera, Moldavia, and Zealandia. An increased attendance of men was noticeable at the Auckland Chamber of Commerce rooms at tho luncheon hour on Tuesday (says the "Herald"), when the Lenten services were continued. Tho Kev. Cecil-Mutk-r gave another powerful address on the subject, "The Love'■of God." The address proved to bo deeply interesting, and the speaker evidently readied the hearts of his listeners. Mr. Mutter was formerly curate of St. Peter's, Wellington.
