(£1) '....■;.'.■.., - 19 0 TIIE WOOL JIARKKT. Reports of the wool sales held in January last have now reached New Zealand, and, according to on-s report, greasy orossbreds, which were not up to American requirements, were quieter, and this refers to all grades of the staple. And the report continues:—A little purchasing of the two highsst qualities has recently taken place on account of a. German spiniv2r, but the quantity thus appropriated has been small in extent, and little else lias been taken cither by Franco or Germany. The chief buying of crossbred as well a e merino has therefore devolved on the shoulders of the Home industry. No great quantity has of late been taken by Yorkshire users, hence the wsight of the supplies has been secured by topmakers. As far as the. bidding was' concerned, there has been plenty of animation in that, but the wool is almost always wanted by • many bidders at the same price, mid the market has lacked the spring which arises from one and another advancing their offer with the object of Retting in and ronderine themselves secure for a run of lots. The position of thi3 crossbred branch in Yorkshire is still very unsatisfactory. New orders for yarn ore hard to obtain either from the internal industry or for shipment abroad. Moreover considerable quantities of secondhand yarn aro still pressing upon the market, and there is much delay and hesitation in giving out particulars of the yarns required under contracts fixed up some time ago, and now in course of execution. In these circumstances it is scarcely to be wondered at that a snirit of reserve and caution betrays itself on the part of the topmakers, and to this is,due the fact that the ndvance in the orico of raw material which took place it the commencement of the sales has now been lost, and values have returned to the level of December, or, allowing for the better condition of the wools available on this occasion, even a. little below. The same is the case with regard to crosslireds in the slipn and scoured condition. Long prices are occasionally paid for tho latter when a needy buyer meets with something of which he is in urgent want, hut taken overhead there descriptions ars little if at all dearer than when the sixth series of last year's auctions came to an end. BIG INSURANCES. From the "Post Magazine" (London) of January 27 last, the following figure*, which represent tho amounts on which the leading insurance offices have to contribute towards the maintenance of tli3 fire brigades, arc an indication cf the enormous business transacted by some offices in the English Metropolis. There are about l? 0 offices which contribute, hut snace only permits us to give the figures of the first ten on the list. The total dsclared insurances in London iu the aggregate amount to £1,094,927,206. Gross ' amount insured in 1910.
