VIA PNEUMATIC TUBE.
—» NEW SYSTEM FOR MAILS. At Auckland Sir Joseph Ward stated definitely that the new Chief Post Oflieo in Auckland will be connected with branch post offices in the city by means of underground pneumatic tubes and that the necessary apparatus iind been ordered foi bolh Auckland and Wellington. From inquiries made yesterday it is understood that the tender of Messrs. Hroderick and Co., of Wellington, has been accepted by the Government to instnl the "Lamson" system of compressed air tubes, through which letters and tel»(jnaiiis>. of any kind may be whisked through from point to point in tho system at high speed. In Wellington it is assumed, subject of course to approval, that the Tβ Aro, Courtenay Place, Thorndon, and probably Newtown post offices will .be connected with tho new General Post Oiice by the pneumatic tube system. . • Though the initial cost may be heavy it is considered that tho saving in time and labour that will be effected by the institution of the new system will bo ample compensation for the outlay.
