FARMERS' UNION.

PALMERSTON TOPICS. (Bj TelcEranh—Snecial Corresnondsut.l Palmerston North, March 10. Tho monthly meeting of the Palmerston Branch of the Farmers' I,'nion was held vestordav. There were present: Messrs. .f. jialsiilio (in the chair), ]!. Gardner, Jt. J. A. Harber, L. P. Bryant. A. Matheson, J. Wugate, A. i'armer, A. Harding, and Captain Jlewitt. Correspondence was received from Mr. A. Buchanan, asking that the matter of quick dispatch of stud stock on the railways bo again considered. The delays in transit and delivery at destination caused inconvenience, and in many cases loss in condition. The following motion was carried:—"That it be a recommendation to tho Provincial Committee that Iho Railway Department bo approached concerning the running of stock trains at night." The chairman brought np the matter of tho Workers' Compensation Act. The mattor will be discussed at tho Provincial Conference. Mr. F. D. Opie, director of tho Technical School, waited on the union with reference to tho scholarship it had donated for competition of sons of farmers who are members of tho Palmerston Branch of the Farmers' Union, and who hold competency certificates. Sir. Opie submitted two courses, one of which wn< held at tho Technical School at night, and tho other during tho day. The courses included tho teaching of wool classing, agriculture, and practical knowledge. This scholarship entitles the holder to a year's free tuition at the Technical School. The courses aro thorough, and the members present expressed satisfaction at the completeness of the programme. Mr. Opie's suggestions were adopted, and the matter of examinations for the scholarship was left in the hands of the secretary and Mr. Opie. The union has the power to terminate these scholarships should the holders notpiako satisfactory use of them. The annual meeting of the branch will be held on April 4.
