COLLEGE PLAYERS' SUCCESS. Taranaki Championships and Handicap Tournament, at Waverley, February 22, 23, and 24. Manawatu Championship and Handicap Tournament, at - Palmerston North, February 17. Ahead in Both Shield and Cup. \ictoria College is to be congratulated on its double victory in carrying off both the shield ami the cup for this season. The College teams are always* sporting people, and all tennis players will be pleased to see them now rewarded with such well-merited success. In tho final for the shield, the Collegians had a verv even contest with Brougham Kill, and it was not generally expected that success would go their v.av. The surprise of the day was the defeat of Laishley by Beere. Laishley carried oil the first set, but failed badiv in the second, and Beere took the third by the margin of two games. G. M. Cleghorn did well in taking a set from H. V. Howe, but tho latter's steady play stead to him. J. B. Parker, who has been showing good promiso of late, played up to Hunter in good style, and only lost to him by two games in the third sot, after "set all" had been called.
•In the final for the cup, though tho Brougham Hill team suffered defeat at tho hands of Victoria College as far as sets wont, yet the former team won more games—a rather unusual occurrence. VC. S. Smith proved too for F. Townsend eventually, though the latter secured the first set ratlicr easily. F. A. de la Stare had not a great deal of difficulty ill disposing of Lawrence, and Browu, after a three-set "go," again fell a victim to Keen. F. Correll, who is noted for steadiness, won from Taylor. In the racket final Brougham Hill had a safe win from Victoria College.
The Cup Competition. Although, in defeating Brougham Hill by se\'en sets to six, Newtown scored less games than that team, this was really accounted for by the fact that they defaulted two sets, which thns gave their opponents 12 games to love. That would have hardly been the case had the sets been played. Pennant Matters. Bidwell Street and Khaudallah had the closest contest in this grade, the former team winning by the bare margin of 0110 game, the rubbers being even. Brougham Hill had an easy . victory from Joluisonville, winning without the loss of ii, rubber. Kilbirnie defeated Oriental with ease. St. John's, Petone B, and Trinity defeated. Newtown, Victoria College, and PelonevA respectively by 1 rubbers to 2 in each'case.
