Jack and Slaughter were appointed to frame conditions for an award, to b<? submitted to a full nwting of the council to-morrow morning. Before Mr. A. 1). Thomson, coroner, at the inquest, at .Ashhurst, on the circuiustancrs surrounding the dcafh of Mr. Thomas l'attinson, who was found dead in bed on Saturday evening, Dr. Greig (having held a post-mortem examination) staled' (hat death was due to heart disea:e, and a verdict «as returned accordingly. Tho pageant fair in aid of the funds of tho High School and Technical School was opened at the Show Grounds this evening by the Mayor. There was a large attendance, and good business wa.s done. The fair will continue till Friday evening. At the Police Court to-day, before Mr. A. D. Thomson, S.M., C, AV. Maxtwl was charged with having driven across a levelcrossing while a train was approaching within half a mile. Sub-Inspector Norwood stated that defendant had been signalled to stop, but had not done so. Defendant, who" did not appear, wrote, stating that he had endeavoured to stop, but his brakes failed lo act. A fine of 20s. with cost? (135.) wa.s imposed. Wm. Burgess pleaded guilty to a similar charge, and was fined 205., with costs 16s. A lad.. 1G years of age, was charged with having stolon a sum of money/375.) from a till. He was remanded till Monday next. Sub-Inspector Norwood stated that the whole trouble was that the boy was in the habit of frequenting billiard saloons.
