0 DEATH OF CAPTAIN WOOD. (By Toleeraßh.—SDOcial CorresooniJent.l Wanganui, Febrnary 12. A drowning accident occurred du tho Wanganui Kivcr, near Ranaua, yesterday, when a young man, named M'Carthy, aged 23, lost his life. • Deceased, with eleven other young men (including two Maoris), was coming down the river in a canoe, which swamped in a rapid near Ranaua, and capsized. The other occupants were rescued by some Maoris, who put off in another canoe when they saw the accident. Strange (o say, deceased, who recently came from Masterton, was ths best swimmer of the party. It is surmised that he was either seized with cramp or struck his head on a snag. The body has not yet been recovered. To-morrow evening the Wanganui Borough Council will consider a notice of morion by the Mayor as follows-.—"That throe months' notice of the termination of his engagement bo given to tho Borough Engineer." Sharks are reported to be very plentiful oil' CastleclifT at present. One launch which took a fishing party out yesterday came back with no fewer than thirty sharks. Captain Nicholson Wood, formerly of tho Union Company's service, and for the last few years in (ho service of a Canterbury line, died here yesterday after a long illness, at the age of GO. Deceased's last command was the Storm, which was in port to-day, and, together with other shipping, flew flags at half-mast,-in respect to the memory of deceased.
