HOME FOR INCURABLES.

THE BUCHANAN GIFT. (By TcletraDh.—Special CorresDondent.l Carterton, February 12. The handsome brick structure now nearing completion on the South Wairarapa Hospital grounds at Greytown, the gUt to tJio hospital and charitable aid district of Wairarapa, of Mr. W. "C. Buchanan, M.P., is to be publicly recognised. Hitherto incurable cases from the Wairarapa havo had to be sent to Wellington, and in some instances at considerable expense to the local bodies. The Wairarapa District Hospital and' Charitable Aid Board had already recognised that sooner or later a home for tho incurable would havo to be erected, and the gift of Mr. Buchanan has saved a considerable, sum of the ratepayers' money, as it has cost between .tOOOO and 3:7000. At a. public meeting held at Grevlown week to discuss the most suitable way of publicly recognising the gift, it was mentioned that it was the outcome of an incident that had appeealed to Mr. Buchanan not so very long ago. One of his old employees who had borne the heat and stress of the day in the Wairarapa, was overcomo with misfortune that compelled him to enter a homo for incurables at Wellington. Mr. Buchanan made it one of his duties on every occasion on which he visited Wellington to ;ce this invalid, and the old man's cry was always that he wanted to die in the Woirarapa. When his end arrived Mr. Buchanan had the poor old fellow In ought to the "\Vairarapa and buried at C!ari>vilto. This incident appealed to Mr. Buchanan so much that he has given the Wairarapa the institution at fireylown. With the object of arranging for some rec'usrnitkm of the handsome gift, a meetiu;,' of representatives from all the local bodies will be held shortly.
