AMERICAN HYMN WRITER. New York, February 11. Professor O'Kane, the well known hymn writer, is dead. AN ALL-ROUND SPORTSMAN. Sydney, February 12. Mr. William Lyons, a sportsman, who previously lived in New Zealand, is dead. For many years the late Mr. Lyons was a familiar figure in New Zealand sporting circles. He landed in Auckland as a lad and started in business there, in conjunction with Mr. R, Blaikie, the firm some time later becoming the first bookmnking members of Auckland Tattersall's. A love for horses soon led Mr. Lyons into the ranks of owners. Among the many horses that carried his colours were Petroleum (half-brother to Hotchkiss), Catesby (own brother in blood to Trenton), Woodpecker, Lonehand, Don Hannibal, Too Soon, and tho ponies Mayflower, Secret, and Cambria. Too Soon, who was so named through being foaled on July 28, was taken to Sydney aloiiß with Mnuton's half-sister Queenie, and was a good winner for Mr. Lyons, but when backed for a big stake for the Newmarket Handicap broke down on the eve of the race. As Mr. Lyons was a bold bettor when he raced his own horses, so he was a heavy 'layer when he put the bag on, and he had heavy settlings when the Yaldliurst colours were carried to victory in the Auckland Cup and Railway Handicap by St. Michael and Cruciform, and again by Siege Gun and Orloff. An ardent lover of bowl 3, he played for City Club, Sydney, against Victoria, and with a team from Auckland Bowling Club, of which ho was for fomc years a member, won the gold medals at the Rotorua tournament in 1901. As a billiard player, he won the Randwick Bowling Club's tournament, and the Auckland Tattorsall's and Sydney Tattersall's tournaments in 1903, the last event from 75 behind. Tho samo year he won a fiveball tournament, making a break of 325, including 300 off the red. In 1901 he was runner-un for tho amateur championship of New South Wales. For some months past Mr. Lyons had been in indifferent health, and recently he had an arm amputated. His death was not unexpected.
