Hi« Excellency (he Governor left Gisborue for Napier by yesterday evening's steamer, en route to Wellington. -Mr. C. Nixon, Collector of Customs at Wellington, resumed duty on Saturday, having now recovered from his recent illness. Mr. and Mrs. Culmm, of the Thormlon Baths, were the recipients on Saturday ol_ a handsome presentation in the shape (it a silver rose-bowl and a case of pipes I rum the hulk-keepers, in recognition of their kindness in keeping and forwarding stores and Idlers, and rendering oilier similar services. •Mr. F. (I. Dalzioll, of this eilv, is at pre.-ent on a visit to Auckland. ' Mr. W. Pryor, secretary of the Now Zealand l-ederatiou of Employers, who icr some weeks has been seriously indisposed, and recently underwent an operaion, is taking an extended holiday in the thermal district and later on tlio \\ angamii Biver. A number of changes among the Roman Catholic clergy are announced as follow:— Kev. Father Peoples, assistant priest at Thormlon, transferred to St. Amies, Newtown; Rev. Father O'Sullivan, formerly of Hlenheim, appointed parish priest at Napier; Hov. Father C. ■f. Venning, of St. Marv of Ihe Angels, lioulcott Street, transferred to Thorndon; liov. Father Frnher, recently ordained, appointed to Nelson; liev. Father Bowden, of St. Patrick"s College, goes temporarily to Hlenheim; Rev. Father Herbert, of Nelson, goes to Napier on relieving duty for a few weeks; Kev. Father ,T. Herring, recently ordained, takes Father Venning'* plaee at St. Mary of the Angels, Boulcott Street; Kev. Father M'Bonnell, Napier, goes to the Seminary at Greenmeadows; Key. Father George' .Alahoney, of Newtown, goes to Hastings, in place of Rev. Father Kerlcv, who has been transferred to Temuka. All the Ministers are in town except the Hon. A. 'P. Ngnla, who is exDccted to arrive by the Napier express (his evening. Dr. Bcgg returned to Wellington by the Maori yesterday morning. Sir Arthur Guinness had intended to leave Ohristchureh for Wellington on Saturday, but he decided to delav his departure until .Monday. He is deeply interested in cricket, and wishes to see as nuich as possible of the Plunket Shield match. Mr. anil Mrs. F. W. Frankland, of Foxton, have returned from a trip to England and America. Mr. .1. M. Earle, one of the departmental heads of Sargcod, Son and Even's local warehouse, was entertained by the staff at a social evening in tho Masonic Hall, Boulcott Street, on Friday evening, as a tribute of the rcsoect and regard in which lie has been held, and in view of the severance of his connection with the firm. During the evening Mr. John PhiJpot, oiw of the oldest employees in the firm, presented Mr. Earle with a valuable gold watch and albert on behalf of the staff, and in proposing his health, alluded-to Mr. Earle as one of the most popular men on the staff, and wished him every success in the future. The toast was 'drunk with musical honours. Among other toasts honoured'during the evening were: "The Company," "The Ladies," "Aljsent Friends," and "The Chairman," tho sneakers including Messrs. Airov. Partridge, Lambert, M'Millan. Cersie," Davics, and limes. Musical and other talent was plentiful, and an excellent programme was provided by Messrs. Short, jolly, Earle, l'argetter, Bakers, Philpot, Partridee, D. Miller. A. C. H. Miller, Donlicc, Hoiloway, M'WillianiSj Forrester, Blight, Green, Nicholson, and Anderson. The accompaniments were played bv Messrs. K. .Miller and Williams, who also contributed several selections.
