THE WORK OF THE U.S. POST OFFICE.
* Tho latest report of tho United Stiites I'ost Office shows, for !he iiist lime since ISS3, a surplus over expenditure. The surplus is not very lurge, being only 219,OOOdols., and does not co;:i|i:iro vfry favourably with the surplus which our own Post Office shows every year, in spite of increases in wages, iiv.t in tho beginning of the Tnl't Administration in 1909 tho deficit was over l",0!X),«ldols., so that the now Pcstinaster-Ocneral may well congratulate himself on the result of the businesslike methods which he has applied lo -his Department. It seems that he has l«en able to square accounts by increasing postal facilities. Since l'JOi) the Department has established 37J1 new offices; the system of delivery' by carriers has been extended to IBG new cities; and new rural routes have been established to the number of 2olG. To accomplish this additional work SOOO new employees have been added, nnd the pay roll is greater by U.000.000t10h., than in the preceding year. Uncle Sam's Post Office is indeed making headway.
