NOTES ON THE RACING.
Kr TeleziaDb.—Ssecial Correanondent.) Hawefa, February 8. Splendid weather again prevailed, and there was a large attendance for the sec.rad day's racing. When the horses were weighed out for the Waimate Handicap It was found that Overtime had not arrived on the course, and the race had to be started < without'him. There were only three runners, Crown Tearl being a tatter favourite than Dearest, with St. Toney the outsider'of the field. The lat'ter hung slightly at the barrier, and Dearest led for half a furlong, when Crown Pearl took charge. To-day, however, ho was never more than threelengths away. At the half-distance Dearest was passed by St. Toney, and he gained on Crown Pearl at the straight entrance. Dearest then came away fast, and won in good style by three lengths. After tho race the owner of Overtime was fined i!l for not scratchinc his horse. Form pointed to The Child as the winner of the Farmers' Plate, and the public made him a strong favourite. Kougo Dragoon was also well supported, and the pair finished first and second. Pikitaepa ran a good race, and was in the lead for a mile, but his condition thon failed. Bed Coral put in a good nin at the turn, but failed to finish, and the favourite won comfort-ably. Black Northern was a slightly better favourite thanSilva in the Open Hurdlo Face to-day. The field had a break on him, and, taking charge six furlongs from home, he won easily. Euroco was ridden in behind, bait fared no better. Eiya was done with early. Silva made the. best showing of the others. Darbv Paul was only a head behind Euroco. Itnivinia, Bismarck, and Cornelian were backed in that order in the Hack Hurdles. The first-named ran a good race for a mile, when she -was doue with. Here, Bismarck rushed to the lead, but Cornelian soon headed him, and. was ■- out by himself at the last .fence. .:. From this out he was only -required to canter. Allure came very fast at the finish, and got "third place, with the favourite fourth. The big handicap was won in much the same style as yesterday, tho winner being well placed throughout, and running home alone from the distance. Deeley ha<l the mount on .Sir Knox to-dav, and he took him to the front till the six-fur-long post, where he steadied 'him, and Lady Mcnscliikoff took charge. In the straight. Sir Knox came again, and won very easily. Kniircn had a winning chance at the turn, but he stopped badly. TJhlando was on hand the whole way, and finished well up fourth. "Royal Arms ran badly, and was never near the front, while Patriotic ran in the rear the whole way, and seemed unable to raiso a gallop. Itoyal Dragoon, who drew No. 1, and had H. Gcay in the saddle, Was the favourite in the Scurry, but, after getting oot well and, leading till half-way down the running, Tobias caught him, and beat him rather comfortably. Master Kilcheran, a useful looking two-year-old, was. third, with Galtee (who stumbled badly) in fourth position. The Normanby Welter provided the sensational finish of the meeting, and none but tho judge could tell which horso had won. Blakeney and Xgatirunnui, who both wore blinkers, gave a lot of trouble at the shirt, but the field got away on even terms. 'J'e Iloti soon took charge, anil led down tiie back from Blakeney and Plantation. The IntlcT lost Ins position at the half-mile, where Meremere and Xgatiruanui ran up to tlie leaders. The latter led into the straight, where Blakeney fell back. Plantation came fast on the outside, and in a brilliant finish he just failed to reach Meremere, with Ngatiruauui a brad away.
Plantation's run was an eye-opener, and proves him to be a horso of great quality. Nukuatu was again made favourite in tho afcc-furlong hack race, but he got a very bad run, and finished out of a place. Handsome Maid showed tho way tor three furlongs, when Monologue anil Dovor Straits took charge. In the straight Avuunco came fast, ami won by a length after a good finish.
