Bergmann, a wharf worker, was giving evidence in a Court case a few (lays ago, when Detective Powell identified the hat llergmann carried in his hand as one of six dozen which disappeared from the, steamer Maheno in December last, llergmann appeared this morning charged with the theft of OS felt hats, valued at .til. the properly of Mnekv. Caldwell and Co. The hats were of a quality that could not have lierii olherwi.-o obtained in .Auckland, llergmann pleaded not guilty, but admitted he gut four hats from coal among-f the Muhcno's cargo, lie was committed for trial, bail being Used at one bond of XtO!) aud two sureties of -lot) each.
