Glorious weather prevailed for the. opening day of , the Egmont meeting, and the trains from north and south brought a large contingent of visitors. The racing was good, and some fine finishes were witnessed. Bronze covered herself with glory by the manner in which she won the Cnp, and it will be interesting to see how Mr. G. Morfo will weight her with Counterfeit and Los Angeles in the Wanganui Cup..' In the evening A. Oliver, who rode the winner, was presented with a gold-mounted whip by tho president of the club.

In the. opening event .Blakeney gave a great deal.,of trouble at the barrier, thereby causing a long delay. Eventually he was put on the outside of the field, but only after 'climbing over several of the ..runners, fit. Petersburg in particular ,receiving marked' attention from him. ' When half the journey had been "completed. St. Toney was in oommand.'from Blakeney, St. .Petersburg,. \mi Lady: Menschikoff, with Pikitaepa wpII bock;- -With three furlongs to go Alana'wha.kaha was rushed to the front, and he quickly placed the issue beyond question. Blakeney stopped to nothing in the , straight;-but St. Toney struggled o.i well, and it was only in the Inst pinch that St.. Petersburg cut him out of second place, Lady Menschikoff ivas fourth. Jockeys Oliver and Clarebuit were fined for disobedience at the barrier. F/uroco and Eiya, both, of whom can go very fast over a short course, were better backed than Black Northern in the Open Hurdle Race. The two first-named Trent off at a great pace, but,'at tho end of a mile, both were tiring palpably. Black Northern was ten lengths away, Tyat he moved up quickly, and took Hie Jaet fence on terms with Euroco. The Auckland horse finished full of rnnnin?, and won by a length. Te "Wlieln was always in the rear. He and F.iya cut out the Inst, fence, and both nearly wiine down. Allure, Diirhy Paul, and Rilva carried Hip bulk of the investments in the Hack Hurdle, in which a field of ten runners faced the starter. From the start Silva and Cornelian led oft', hut Attention headed the former.at tho first feuce, and led into tho straight with Cornelian. Passing tho stand Rawinia and Alluro were most prominent of tho others. Down the back Attention fell back, and Silver CI use joined Silva in the lead. At the lust fence,- Silva (on the rails), Rawinia and Allure jumped together, but in tho run homo, Silva held his own, ami won. by halt' a longth. Allure was fourth. ' Aifc°ufcion tras pullod un. and.

after tho race, was found to be suffering with kidney trouble.

There wci-o twenty runners in the fivefurlong hack race, but, despito the, large field, ihe public made Dirge a good favourite, and she landed tho race, but it was only after a terrific finish, and thu verdict was a bnro head. The start iya.» a good one, Bowbt'lls ami Itallce showing mil. but with two fin-long-, gone Dirge joined Gultce and Boivbells fell buck. Tho leaders were two length-* clear of liowbells and Glen!'eiii as they swept iut'j the straight, and then a luinl linisli ri'.siilled, and thu pair ran head ;ind head to (he post over (ho last furlong. Deeley, on Galtee, drew the whip, hut L'nu'rson sat still, and, us they passed the post, Dirge was a head to the good. Tobias was clo-o up, and then enme Uleufern and liowbells. They were rather, a poor lot which lined up lii'r the Ladies' I'uric- event. The public made Suniose favourite, but the horso had developed a cold on the way north, and was uniblo to show his best int'iii. Ijobpline made the running for six furlongs, when Master Tupuhi forged ahead, and won very comfortably, lioiige Dragoon, who looked as if a race would improve him, was a good third. Tlie Ejinout Cup was a "one horse" race at ihc Kuisli, tor biouze spreadeagled everything in tne straight, and won very comfortably. At the start Sir Knox led lrom a bundled field, with Jatgon and Mendip last. With a furlong gone, Sir Knox was chopped out, and went back to last. As they rounded the bend into the straight Jlercmere led from Royal Arms, with Bronze on the rails in fourth position. Going out of the straight Jargon ran wide, and Bronze then took third place. Down the back the leading positions were unchanged, but Kauroa joined Bronze, with Coroinniirlel and t Jargon next, Sir Knox, with Mendip, being last. Itomul the bottom bond Goodwin Park put iu a good run, but fell away again before reaching the leaders in the straight. Bronze now ran past Mereniere and Royal Anns, and, coming on full of running, won by three lengths. Coromandel stayed on we'll, and got his usual minor place. finishing just in front of Jargon. Royal Arms was fourth, and Sir Knox fifth. The latter was very unfortunate in losing his place early or he might have reversed positions with the winner. The Flying Handicap turned out the best of good things for "Crown Pearl, vfho moved off first, 'and quickly put a big break on tho field. At the turn he was out by himself, and then ran in very comfortably. Gladiole headed Te Roti a few yards* off the post. Dearest, who stumbled badly at the start, ivas fourth. Nukiiatii was a slightly better favourite than Ngatirair.ii in the concluding event, but the latter won nicely after a' good race with two outsiders, an:l W. Price, who rode the winner, was seen to advantage. Nnkuatu's rider lost his reins just after the start, and got a bad run throughout'. . : SECOND DAY'S ACCEPTANCES. IBy Telegraph—Frees Association.)
