At a special meeting of the Labourers' .Union to-night, the president (Mr. W. H. Perry) presiding, the two following resolutions wore unanimously carried:—(l) That this body approves and hereby adopts the constitution and platform proposed in the unity campaign, subject to such amendments as may bo inado in the first National Conference, to bo held under tho provisions of the proposed constitution during Easter week, 1912; (2) that a sum of £3 weekly bo hereby subscribed by this organisation to the expenses of the unity campaign,' and a proper officer directed to make payments accordingly. At a meeting of the Education Board to-day, tho chairman reported that the plan of grading teachers and submitting only one name to committees had been in operation for 18 months, and although certain committees had raised objections to it, contending that somo power of selection shojld be given them, on tho whole it had worked well. The teachers, with but for exception.*, were thoroughly satisfied, and tho Teachers' Institute had acknowledged that the board had made an honest attempt to improve tho condition* of deserving teachers. Accused swore that he bought a bicycle and swag together on tho road. P. J. Cowan was acquitted on a charge of attempting an illegal operation. Xho Judge directed tho jury that it was unsafe to convict, as tho .woman's evidence was lacking in corroboration. Three discharges from bankruptcy were granted, and two divorce decrees, Ritson v. Ritson (Ashburton) and Hardcastlo v. Hardcastle. CABDRIVEFI'S ASSAULT. Pilmerston North, February 1. In tho Supreme Court, Patrick M'Afterty, an elderly cabdrivcr, who was found guilty on Monday of assaulting another cabdrivcr, came up for sontence. The assault consisted in kicking his opponent in tho jaw and fracturing it. The Chief Justice imposed a fine of £25. ACQUITTED. •Palmcrston North, February 7. 'At tho Supreme Court to-day, before his Honour the Chief Justice, Sir Robert Stout, William Thomas Bownter was aequitted on a charge of a breach of the Bankruptcy Act. A child named Robert Cuthbertson, agod two years, died from scalds at the hospital to-mght as the result of pulling a vessel of boiling water over himself. INVERCARGILL'S PROGRESS. Invercargill, February 7. A very interesting and satisfactory' return of the money orders and savings bank business for the Invercargill postal district during tho last two years has been prepared and shows tho financial solidity of the district. DEATH FROM ALCOHOLISM. Christchurch, February 7. An inquest was hold at Lyttelton this morning before Mr. 11. W. Bishop, district coroner, on the body of Thomas Hceligan, who was found dead in his bed in a firemen's "batch" yesterday morning.
