At the Magistrate's Court to-day Sydney Beflveu was charged, with not attending the parades of (i Battery in (onus of the Defence Act. The defendant is n member of the Alunieipal Fire Brigade , , and lie stated that as such he considered that ho served his country sufficiently. Lieutenant Hurgess said that there Were a number of similar cases, and the result of the present case was being awaited by other defaulters. No member of local institutions was exempt under the Act, although ho did all ho could to meet them. Mr. Loughnan, S.M., said the Act had to be carried out, and he would impose a substantial penalty. He regarded defendant's excuse us..fictitious.'.tml inadequate, Being a member of a lire brigade did not exempt him. Defendant would be fined M nnd 7s. costs, but in anv future cases the magistrate said he woufd inllict a very severe penalty.
