PLACARDS AN]) ATTEMPT TO IUHN HAURACKS. IBy TelcEraph-Press Association.'. Christchurch, February 3. Tho authorities «t (he Christcliurch district militnry headquarters ollice, in Montreal Hlrcet, were considerably annoycil tin's morning to find thnt tlie'fences surrounding the oliice nnd King Edward JJiirracks had been placarded with copies of n printed manitesio urging all and smiilr.v to oppose "conscription," and also with a number of smnll.squai'e "stickers" bearing such mottoes as "Don't be a conscript; bi> a man"; "3len, not piaips," and "Tlio military striko is now on." The stickers bora no imprint, and w«re evidently made with a rubber stamp or very amateurish printing press, but the more elaborate manifesto (in addition to bearing the imprint of n- local printer's firm) bore tho signatures of nine persons. In addition to these demonstrations of disapproval of the compulsory clauses of the Defence Act, ,i, mild attempt at incendiarism was made at the. barracks last night, shortly after ten o'clock. The fire brigade was called out, and tho outbreak was speedily chocked.. An examination, made (his morning by n reporter, showed that a sural! lire Irad been started in an alleyway between the street fence of the barracks and one of the old wooden order-ly-room buildings. The ninterials used in building the (ire were pieces of decayed Kicking and brown paper, evidently gathered from the grounds about the barracks. The (ire had been so quickly quelled thnt it had barely scorched tho paint at the bottom of the,weather-boards.
