CHEESE AND BUTTER.
EXPORTS TO DATE. During the conference of tho South Island Dairy Companies, Mr. J. R. Scott, secretary of* the association, made the following statement.regarding shipments of dairy produce up to January 31:—Up to the beginning of January the weather was against good production, cold and wet prevailing, which affected both cows and pastures. But since January 1 tho weather has much improved, and for the rest of the season a considerable increase on last year's export is expected. There is a considerable increase in the number of factories this year, and many more will be started next season. SUMMARY OF SHIPMENTS. From tho Dominion. Butter. Cheese. Boxes. CratesLondon '110,203 1G0.300 West of England B.G3G 23.753 Totals «8,839 184,173 In regard to the shipments to London compared with last year, there is a decrease of 73,85-1 boxes of butter, and an increase of 18,551 cases of cheese. Butter to the West of England increased by 7113 cases, and cheese by 8801 crates. There were 30,1)00 boxes of butter forwarded to San Francisco and Vancouver, which will account for part of the decrease to London. It will be noted, too, that there has been an increase in both butter and cheese shipments to the AY est of England, so that despite the unfavourable • weather the position is very satisfactory.
