BERTRAND STEWART'S TRIAL.

The case against Bertrand Stewart, charged with attempted espionage at Bremen, is exclusively based on the evidence of a Belgian who, according to tho defence,' while. acting as interpreter and guide, thrust upon Stewart information unasked and then denounced him, witnesses showing that the Belgian was untrustworthy and was previously convicted in' Belgium. The Court dispensed with the evidence of tha rest.
WAR OFFICE INSTRUCTIONS.. (Rec. February 4, 5.5 p.m.) London, February 3. The War Office has issued fresh instructions to officers ' travelling in Germany i including the reporting of themselves in Alsace Lorraine to the police and military authorities. They must so report in town visited. As revealed in the course of Stewart's espionage trial, he, as an officer, travelled in Germany without the knowledge of the War Office. MR. STEWART SENTENCED. (Rec. February 5, 0.5 a.m.) ■ Berlin, February i. Mr. Bertrand Stewart, tho English solicitor and yeomany officer, arrested last year at Bremen on a charge of espionage, lias been sentenced to three and a half years' imprisonment in a fortress. Stewart addressed the public in Court and said ho wished everyone in England to know that he was innocent. Mr. Stewart is a member of a wellknown firm of solicitors. He is 38 years of age and was educated at Eton and Christ Church. He served with the Imperial Yeomanry in tho South African War, and is a lieutenant in the West Kent Yeomanry.
