IBy Tcleeranh.—SDCcial CorresDondeaM Palmerston N., January 18. At a meeting of the Executive "of the Palmerston Fire Board to-day it was decided to purchase a Scmouis 'petrol motor fire engine. The fireworks ordered from London by the management of the military tournament, and which should have arrived in time for the display on January 1, have now come to hand and will be set off at the showgrounds on Monday evening next. The friends of Mrs. Essex, widow of the late Mr. B. Essex, ex-Mayor of Palmerston, will regret to learn that she has had to enter the Palmerston Hospital through severe indisposition. Still another of our old settlers has passed awav in the person of Mr. William Collingwoou; who died nt his residence here this morning. The late Mr. Collingwood, who was 80 years of age was of a retiring disposition and had been an invalid for about two years. Previous 'to his arrival here ho resided at Wanganui for about 25 yours, having settled there in 18S0, when he and his family came out from England. He was a well-known and ,highly-respected citizen of Wanganui and old friends wiTl be sorry to hear of his death, hi England he devoted considerable time to the cause of Temperance, and often gave lectures to the working men. He leaves a widow, two sons, and three daughters to mourn their loss. The sons are: .Messrs. W. H. Collingwood. town clerk'; J. Collingwood, Teilding; and the daughters. Mrs. 1). W. Lou (Palmerston North), Mrs. Young (Hawera), and Mrs. Tarrant (Peilding). • The winter show committee of the Mnnawatu A. and P. Association met this afternoon when, among other business, it was decided to order a half-ton cheese for disposal at the winter show to havo .£ls of coin distributed in it.
