LAWN TENNIS.

i PROJECTED ENGLISH VISIT. , THE DRIVE TEAM. A.recent cablegram from Sydney stated that the Australasian Lawn Tennis Association had considered .in offer by Mr. A. Wallis Myers lo bring nn English team out to Australia and had decided lo offer the team hull' gate profits on llio tout subject to its being approved by tho English Lawii Tennis Association. The Australasian body further decided to' suggest that the English team, if it ciimo out, might extend its tour to New ZealandThe matter eamo up at the meeting of tho management committee of the NewZealand Lawn Tennis Association last evening, .when a letter was received from tho Australasian Association covering a copy, of the letter in which Mr. -Myers proposed tho tour. Tho latter communication, written under date November 10, 1911, is as follows:—"On the eve of his return to Australia I was discussing.with Mr. Dunlop tho.possibility of aa English team visiting Australia in the winter of 1912-13. He seemed to think that tho Australasian Lawn Tennis Association would not be averse to-accepting the offer of an English player of standing who would bring out a representative team to tour your centres. ' I now writs to say that, as captain of ' the English Drive team which visited South Africa last year, I shall be pleased to organise a team consisting of four players to visit Australia in 1912. I think I could secure three of my South African team, viz., C. V. Dixon, A. E. Beamish, and F. G. Lowe, who, with myself, could le*v« England early in October next. According to the regulations we should have to travel as the Drive Club team, but. sinco three of the members at least, would be representative English players, I don't think your gates would suffer on that account.' ' "Perliaps you will let me know, at your convenience, how the proposal appeals to" you, and what terms you would bo disposed to offer the club. I may say that, providing the bulk of our out-of-pocke: expenses arc found, I should not hositate to fall in with any reasonable, arrangement. May I _ add that I have long anticipated a visit to < your lawn tenuis centres, and, even if you are unable to entertain the proposal outlined here, I hope we rony meet on your soil at some future time." The Management Committee decided to postpone consideration of the proposed tour until d future meeting. As showing the standing of the Drive team, it may be mentioned that two of its members, Messrs. Dixon and Lowe, were included in the challenge team which' went to New York and played off the challenge tie with America for the Davis Cup, 1911, and were defeated by the, Americans. In 1910-11 tho Drive team, which then included Mr. R. B. Powell, in addition to the four players who have been mentioned,, played three test matches against United South Africa. Arriving early in November, tho team defeated Cope Town, at Rondebosch, with the loss of only one match. The Englishmen beat another Capß Town team by three mntches to one. Later they (scored victories over Port Elizabeth, Grabamstown, King Williamstown,' and East London, • in each case with great ease. Continuing its journey, the team was uniformly successful in the matches at Kimbsrley, Bloemfontein, and Ladysmith. The first test match also provided the Englishmen with a decisive victory. The match was played at Durban, the English team winning all the singles and all but one of the double matches. The Drive team scored altogether in the singles 8 matches to none, IS sets to 3, and 109 games to 63, and in the doubles 3 matches to 1, 6 sets to 3, and 46 games to 35.
