, i. 0 (From Our Special Correspondent.) Palmerston,'January 12. The monthly meeting or tho Palmerston Hospital and Charitable Aid Board was held' yesterday, Mr. J. G. Wilson presiding. Tho Treasury wrote notifying tne Myrnent o£ JiloU IDs. Gd. subsidy. Mr. J. Coyle, Wellington, forwarded .£l3 Cs. Bd. reteived from Mosjrs. Williams and Meredith. Mr. I'. J. Nathan wrote in connection with the proposed children's ward at tho hospital, that, with tho Government subsidy, ho had nearly sufficient funds in hand to complete the building. Ho also stated that Messrs. West and Jonjensen, architects, had expressed their willingness to prepare plans at tho usual f'c<yj, which they would refund as a donation to the hospital It was dccided to agi-co to this arrangement. On the motion of Mr. Harford, who stated'that ho was getting more information on tho mat> ter from England, tho question of lighting the hospital by electricity was postponed till next meeting. Dr. Prengley wrote that the Hospital Department would raise no objection to tho board expending money for the purchase of a horse and trap for the ii£c of the hospital. Tho report of tho matron, making various suggestions as to tho training of the nurses in tho uso of massage and increases of salary to certain ot tho nurses, was adopted. Tho secretary reported that a levy of i£43 17s, 9d. had been received from tho Fcilding Borough Council, and .£3 7s. Gd. from the Foston Borough Council for tho proposed Old People's Home. Tho resignation of Nurse Schmidt was received with regret. The Charitable Aid inspector' reported that lie had received only two applications for relief (one in Palmerston and oiio in Fcilding) during the month of December, as against 12 for the same month last year, lie stated that the thanks of tho board were duo to the Mayor of Palmerston (Mr. J. A. Nash) for providing Christmas cheer for tho charitable aid pensioners. Mr. W. Rutherfurd tendered his resignation as treasurer, which was accepted with regret, and a vote of thanks was accorded him for his Mr. F. Mowiem was appointed to the. vacancy. The secretary was instructed" to place in tho hands of tho board's solicitor for collection the names of two hundred patients who owed fees for two years and upwards. Tho Mdnawatu Amateur Athletic Club has decided to hold a sports gathering on February 28, and evening meetings on January 31 and February 14. The president of tho club (Mr. If. R. Cooper) has intimated that he will present a prizo for tho most-points winner at tho evening meetings.. Last night two horses in a cab took fright at eomo timber- lying in tho Square, ,tho i sworvo smashing tho polo of tho vcliiclo. Tho driver endeavoured to stop the animals, but tho broken polo rendered thejn uncontrollable. In turning tho corner into Broad Street the cab skidded and tho axle broke, and the driver was-thrown-from his seat. The horses then got away from tho cab. There were two passengers in tho vehicle, ono of ivhorn jumped out, but the other remained in'his scat till the cab came to a stop However, neither the pa.ssenger who jumped out nor tho driver were hurt. One of Die horses was rather badly cut about by contact with the broken end of the polo.
