SEAMAN DROWNED.
$ (By Telegraph—Press Association.) Cfiristchurch, January 12. An inquest on tho body of the seaman Campbell, found in the harbour, was held at Lyttclton to-day. William White, nightwatciiman on the Waipori, stated that, at 1.30 a.m. on January 5, the do ceased camo down to his ship with a message for witness from the lamp trimmer of the Wakatu. Deceased had a bottlo of beer, but witness refused to have any of it, and told him to go on board his ship. Deceased, who was under the influence of liquor, went off in tho opposite direction, and, as Ire did not return, witness went to look fur him, and found him asleep on tho railway linos at the mouth of tho tunnel. Witness took him part of tho way to tho wharf, whero tho Wakatu * washing, and then went back to his own ship, which he ought not to have left. Deceased must have fallen off the wharf after witness left him at 1.45 a.m. The coroner returned a verdict that the deceased had been found drowned in Lyttelton Harbour.
