(By Telesraph—Press AssociationO [ *— : TENT TAKES FIRE. TWO LADS BADLY BUENED. Christchurch, January 12. Two lads named Phillip and Harold Crampton, living in Albert Street, Linwood, wore somewhat severely burned owing to tho tent in which they wero sleeping catching fire. It appears that early yesterday morning the elder lad, Phillip, was awakened by smoke, and found tho tent and matting ablaze. Ho awoke tho younger lad, and they both rushed outside, bat they were unable to cscapo before they had sustained bad injuries. They wero both admitted to the hospital, where their injuries wero attended to. One is progressing favourably. The younger lad is the more badly burned, having sustained injuries to his body as well as his-face and hands. The older lad was burned about the face, hands, and foot. BAR HORSEPLAY. Christchurch, Januai7 12. A charge of manslaughter arising out of the death of George Shaw, at Leithfield on December 29, was investigated at Ainberley yesterday, James Russell being the accused. Evidence showed that there was some skylarking in the bar of tho Royal Hjtel, Leithfield, in the course of which Russell put Shaw on the bench. Shaw struck Russell, who again caught Shaw by the neck and put him on the bench. Subsequently a lump rose on Shaw's neck and continued to swoll, .and Shaw died a3 the result of laceration of a vein in tho neck. Eussoll had been some hours in the bar, and had had several whiskies when the trouble occurred, but all the witnesses wero emphatic that there was nothing malicious in Russell's horseplay. The case was dismissed. • HE STORED GROG, Ashburton, January 12. At the Magistrate's Court to-day, Thomas Gibson, a confectioner, was fined .£lO for storing liquor for another man in a No-License district. This was tho first case of tho kind heard in Ashburton. Gibson was also charged, in conjunction with Birniard Kennedy, with keeping liquor for sale, but Mr. Day, S.M., held that there was not sufficient evidence to support tho charge, and dismissed tho information. BRIEF MENTION. Ashburton, January 12. Mr. E. P. Lee, member for Oamaru, successfully defended himself on a charge of motoring over tho Ashburton traffic bridge at an exccssivc speed. CHRISTMAS FLOODS. Dunedin, January 12. The city engineer reports that the damage occasioned by the recent NorthEast Valley floods at Christmas tunc amounts to close on .£9OO. PICKING OYSTERS. Auckland, January 12. For picking oysters at Waihcke on Boxing Day, a man was fined £1 and 15s. costs in tho Police Court to-day. Defendant remarked that such au offence was not worth whilo telling untruths about. SCHOOL BURNED. Auckland, January 12. The constablo at To Awamutu has reported to headquarters that the Harapepo Public School was destroyed by fire yesterday. Ho is proceeding to the , scene to make inquiries. FOUND DEAD. Christchurch, January 12. An elderly woman named Mrs. Annie Morris, residing in St. Asaph Street, was found dc4id in bed this morning by her daughter, who is deaf and dumb. Mrs. Morris had been suffering from asthma,, and had been attended by a doctor.
