RUN OVER BY A TRAM.
| —6- ; V FATALITY AT NEW BRIGHTON. tßj Telccmuh.—Press Association.) Christchurch, January 12. The New Brighton gala yesterday ended in a tragedy. A man named George Puletliorpe, who was head porter at Warner's Hotel, was run over by a tram in Sea View Road, and received such chocking, injuries that ho died in the hospital early this morning. An inquest was held this afternoon. ' t Geo. Willis, boilerman, Raid lie visited New Brighton tho previous day with deceased, about 9 p.m., by tram, 'l'hoy kept together all tho time. Tlioy were going to catch the 10.40 p.m. car on their return to Christchurch. Witness boarded tho car first, and Palothorpo made to get on the first trailer from tho wrong side, wliilo tho tram wa9 in motion. Ho got on tho back stop of the trailer, and, while leaning out, ho struck a tram-pole, and was knocked betwoon the first rnd second trailer. His arm and leg l'ell' across tho rail, and tho end trailer went over him. Witness jumped off tho car and sang out for the tram to bo slopped. Palethorpo was dragged somo distance. When tho car pulled up, witness picked Palethorpo up and took him to tho footpath. Witness loft him there and went for a doctor, who bandaged him up, and ho was taken to the hospital. I'aletliorpe was quite sober. Tho coroner returned a verdict_ that deceased met his death from injuries received as tho result of boarding a train from tho wrong side.
