'MAITAI FROM SYDNET. An arrival in port at 6.20 a.m. yesterday was I'm Union Company's R.M.S. Maitai. The vessel loft Sydnsy ut 5 p.m. on Saturday lost, and, as soon as she cleared the Heads, encountered strong southerly winds, which increased to a gab, this being accompanied by a heavy sea. These conditions prevailed until tho vessel was within 12 hours' steam of Stephen Island. Prom this point until arrival in port tro Maitai experienced moderate south-east winds and seas. Deeply laden with wool and other general cargo, and in good trim, the ShawSarill steamer Kumara left AVellington for London, via Tencriffe, at 6.10 a.m. yesterday. She has on board a large quantity of wool for the March sales, and is du; at London on February 24. MORAYSHIRE'S MOVEMENTS. To-day the F.-H.-S. steamer Morayshire is esnsctcd to leave Dunedin for Waitara. She is due at Wellington from tho latter port on January 17, and sails again on January 23 for Timaru and Lyttelton. On January 27 she leaves Lyttelton finally for Avonmouth. THE STAR OF INDIA. The Tyser liner Star of India is duo at Wellington on January 18. At this port discharge of the vasscl's London cargo will be completed. She then loads on the roast, and it is expected to dispatch her for Londou early in February. ATHENIC ARRIVES HOME. Cable advice received by the local agents for the Show. Savill and Albion Company slates that K.M.S. Athenic, which left AVellington on November 30 for Plymouth and London, arrived at Plymouth on Weilncsilny morning, January 10-her due date. WAIRAU IN TROUBLE. Word reached AVellington yesterday that tho small steamer IVairau was in trouble, at Kai-amja. It appears that, as the vessel was crossing tho bar outwards at 2 p.m. on Wednesday an accident, occurred to her rudder, and tho anchor was dropped a mile outride the bur. Just about this time tlvj small steamer Defender was entering the port, and ■assistance was offered, but was declined.
