GREAT FIRE IN NEW YORK.

The nine-story marble building of the Equitable Lifo Assurance Society and other great commercial corporations has been destroyed by fire. Three men leaped from the roof and were killed. Deputy-Fire-Chief "Walsh is believed to be dead in the ruins. Mr. Giblin, the president of the State Deposit Company, took refuge in the vaults, and it is possible that he will bo released. The property loss exceeds Fire-Chief-Walsh was standing on an upper floor when it came down with a crash. Other firemen who were with him clung to a window-ledffp and were rescued, but Walsh disappeared. The fire occurred in the heart of the financial district. Wall Street brokers congregated iD hundreds to watch the fire. It will be necessary to saw through steel bars before it is possible to reach President Giblin in tho vault. Mr. Geo. Ross, representatives in New Zealand of the Equitable, has received cable advice that the securities of the society aro intact,' and business is only temporarily inconvenienced. The society has opened offices in Broadway.
