VICTORIA FOR LYTTELTON TO-DAY. At 5 p.m. to-day the" Huddart-Parker steamer Victoria leave? Wellington . for Lyttelton and Dunedin. Usually she leaves Wellington on Fridays, but, owing to the vessel having arrived at Auckland during the Christmas holidays, she is running a day late this trip.
TOKOMARU, DUE MONDAY. An expected arrival at Wellington from Montreal, via way ports on Monday, will be the New Zealand Shipping Company's chartered steamer Tokomara. It is hoped to dispatch her for Lyttelton on Wednesday.
WRECKAGE REPORTED. The Secretary of the Marine Department (Mr. Geo. Allport) has received advice from the Customs official at the Chatham Islands, stating that Mr. J. J. Fongcre, of Mohaka, reported that he had found wreckage on the beach. It casic ashore on October 29, and appeared to be part of the deck of some wooden vessel. It was all in one piece, and consisted of seven beams of bliMgum, planked with orcgon pine timber. The planks had been fastened to the beams with galvanised iron bolts and nuts. The structure measured 20 feet long by about 10 or 12 fast wide. At the time of landing on the beach the wreckage was covered with barnacles. The timber was not water-logged, however, nnd the nuts unscrewed easily. This gave the impression that the supposed decking had not been long in the water.
WAITEMATA HtOM NEWCASTLE. Shortly before 8 a;m. yestordtty the Union Company's hie tramp steamer Waitemata arrived at ATcllingtou from Newcastle with 80CO tons of coal. The passage across the Tasman S«a was uneventful, moderate wcatlier lioinj eipcrionccd. Sho is anchored in the Etreani, and will dis".liarec the bulk of hor cargo into hulks. The vessel returns to to load coal for Java, and proceeds thence to Calcutta to load for New Zealand ports.
PLEASING CUSTOM REVIVED. In the palmy days of the old wiling clippers it was the custom to decorate the ships with evergreens when in port at Christmas time, and those who remember seeing them thus adorned at Tort Chalmers about a quarter of a century ago will recall the large amount of trouble and care frequently involved by tho oflicers and crew in "decorating the ship." With a number of vessels lying in port, says the "Otago Daily Times," thcro was keen rivalry with each other to make their ship look the gayest, and ofttimes much labour and ingenuity wcro required, not only in scouring the hush for foliaue, but also in placing it in position. The masthead, the end of tho jib-boom, and the tips of the main yards wero usually the pla<i3s choeen for tho largest trees or shrubs it was possible to place in those precarious positions. gradually faded into the mists of the past, and for quite a number of years the festive season ha.s merely come and gone to the accompaniment of a drapery of shin's bunting. This year, however, the custom has been vory agreeably revived by the officers and crow of the New Zealand Shipping Company« steamer Paparoa, which was gaily adormd for Christmas Way. The gangway was wreathed with evergreens, and at the !.?il \'" BB . i. cro , y a * a lcat * archway.
