HUTT AND PETONE NEWS.

« OFFAL HANDS ON STRIKE. At 9.30 yesterday morning the offal hands, twenty-five in number, employed at the Gear Meat Works, Petone, struck for an increaso in their wages from Is. 3d. to Is. 6d. per hour. On tho previous evening the offal hands at tho Wellington Meat Company's works at Ngahauranga went out on strike for tho samo reasons, but returned to work next morning, under the old conditions. The Petone men were moro successful, however, and will return to work to-morrow. Hitherto tho offal work has been divided amongst several contractors who, it is stated, have earned M or .£7 per week each. Under the new agreement, the money originally paid to the contractors will be divided directly auiongct the men, who will all bo under a single foreman. It is stated that there is "great dissatisfaction" amongst the rest of the meat workers both.at the Gear nd the Wellington Companies' works, and tho success c.f the Petone offal hands' six hours-* shiko will embolden tho others to formulate their demands at onco, About POO men are employed at the Gear Works and at Ngahauranga. The manager of the Gear Works states that the rate of pay obtaining at Petone and at Ngahaaranga is higher than at any other freezing works in the Dominion, and that he is unaware of any discontent
