THE RACING SEASON.

NOTES ON THE RACING,

MABAWATU R-C SUMMER MEETING. THE THIRD DAY. BIG RACE WON BY BIRKLINE. HOSTILITr TO INEY. After steady rain at Paltnerslon North all day on 'Thursday, . followed by a' severe thunderstorm in the evening, the weathor broke tine yesterday morning for tho concluding day of the Manawatu facing Club's summer meeting, and tho attendance was up to the average for an off day. As on tho two preceding days of. tho meeting, a flag was flown haifmasf, on tho course as a mark of respect to tho memory of (he lute Mr. J. Cotter, who was president of the club in 1801. The rains that had fallen on Thursday had neoessarily affected tho grounds, but tho racing track, though heavy, was scarcely as bad as might in, tho circumstances have been expected. Tho racing resulted in one or two very exciting finishes, and in a couple of other instances the finishes might have been much closer but for indilferent starts. The principal event, the President's Handicap, resulted in favour of the Gisborneowncd Bivkline, while Blakeney's success in tho Christmas Weltar made the fourth victory for the Highden colours at the meeting. There was a hostile demonstration against lney when she won the Farewell Handicap. Speculation on the totalisator was brisk, and during the day the sum of .£14,375 was passeu through the machine, making a total Of ,£56,318 for tho fixture. These figures form a record in the club's history. Results of the racing are appended:—

NOTES ON THE'RACING. When' tho first race catuo up for decision it was evident that the track was very heavy, and.tuo candidates' were'all tiring bauiy in tlic last furlong. .Midian,. wild was a pronounced favourite, was taken to tho trout, to win from end to end, but she' Was uuablo to withstand a final challenge, from Queen of Scots, on'whom tho -apprentice, Tricklcbank, rodo a well-judged race. The issue was in doubt right up till tho judgo's box, first one and then tho other appearing to bo winning 1 in tho final furlong. Queen of Scots, may bo very useful now that sho has struck form. Sho' registered record timo in the good going on Wednesday, and proved at home yesterday. Pukototara was expected.to show up well,' but he got all • the worst of the 6tart, and after running up to Midian in tho first couple of furlongs, faded away before -the straight was reached. Backers seemed ill-advised, in raking Waiputere favourite in the Te Maitai Hurdles, for her big weight was bound to hamper hir in the heavy going l . She raced prominently, for a mile, rut was eventually beaten out of a place. Leolanter's running in Wednesday's race,; made it appear as if he would be bard to beat in the mile and a half yesterday, but To Whetu proved too good'for him. Considering the 6tato of the going, the race was run in capital time, and, had Te Whetu and Leolanter taken the shortest track home in the last couple of furlongs, the time would have been faster still. Seaman was always a good horse m the heavy going, and his forward running yesterday suggests that he is ccming back to form.

Cork was made a good favourite in tho Clandeboye Welter, and; nicely ridden, he won comfortably at the finish. Eclogue, who was well backed, never looked liko winning. The race for the President's Handicap was one of tho best of the meeting, for at different stages all the candidates (with the exception of Inev) appeared to have .winning chances. lney, who was heavily backed, was last as they eamo. past the stand, and she never imnroved much. The running of Birkline behind Queen of Scots on Wednesday, and the titter's victory in the ooening event yesterday, pointed to Birklihe's chances in the big race as being particularly good. On tho machine, however, the Birkenhead gelding was only fourth favourite. His victory was easily achieved, for. without bustling liim at any stage, Tricklcbank kept him in a nico position, and as soon as the straight was' reached he came out and was not afterwards troubled. Goodwin Park, after occupying a. backward position for tho first mile, finished .strongly, and easily beat all but the winner. Voetgang, Aberbrothock. and Vi all mado creditable showings for tho first milo.

Gay 'Lawless was voted the best of good things for tho Westbury Hack Handicap, and, with W. Young in tho saddle, Sho /;ot a flying start, and never left the issue in doubt. Tho Lctho mare- is among the candidates entered for tho DouroCup to bo run at Trcnthain next month. That she is a fairly smart galloper goes without saying, but, with tho exception of Lady Laddo, 'who was conceding her 221b., the horses which sho beat yesterday can hardly bo esteemed formidable. Moreover, Lady Laddo is a poor beginner at best, and fivo furlongs was too short a distance fqr her to be seen to advantage. Overheard and Elkraaid both showed pace, but well-backed candidates —Parewanui and Monologue—ran disappointingly. Gkdiolo was tho only withdrawal from the Kawau Handicap, f6r which Projectile was mado favourite. This was probably on account of tho fact that his time for the Awapuni Handicap was given : as the fastest six furlongs of the'' meeting, but, if backers had disregarded such an uncertain factor as time, Rangiatua's recent form .would have ensured his being made favourite. His second to Bronzo on Tuesday, and again to Boanerges on Wednesday, were bot.i full of merit He was consistent again to-day, and this time managed to get home first though ho only had the narrowest of margins to sparo from Lady Moutea, who filled second place lor the (hird time at (ho meeting. Mou Ami was a trifle unlucky for she ran very wide from the home turn, and was then only a head behind Lady Moutoa. The victory ot Rangiatiu was very popular for Mr. Buiek's other horsss—Tainui and Abcvbrolhock'-had been runnii g prominently at tho moot: ing. though without success. Matjow was Hie. favourite selection in tho Christmas Hack Welter; but he ran badly, and finished out of a place, victory going to Blakency. This was tho fourth success for tho Highden colours at tho meeting. Waitoto, after losing several lengths at tho start, made a .terrific run down the back stretch into second place.' His jockey then gave him a spell, for a few strides, and sent him along again in the straight the ' Conqueror gelding beating all but the winner. With ordinary luck ho would have won'. .

The withdrawal of Attention and Ladrone left four runners in tho Farewell Handicap. These included iDey, who had finished last in tho President's Handicap l earlier in the afternoon. She was again rondo favourite. Thero was considerable, delay at the start, tho tapes being broken on Several occasions. Eventually, when the dispatch was effected, lney raced behind t.iio leaders until (he business end of tho journey, end then came out and won 'easily. A section of the crowd gathered round tho bird-cago as tho horses returned te tcale, and the winner was treated to a hostilo demonstration. Tho totalisator, however, commenced to nay out on tho winner, and gradually the uprjar rubsided.
