Christmas Eve followed on a. beautiful' Saturday, biit late in the afternoon tlio sky became- dark with gloomy prophecy, and about 8 o'clock -the first drops of tain began to,spot tho pavement? and warn: the festive shoppers .'to /-hasten lionfeirarils. , .'■'■"'•■ - ' ..Sunday, dawned with a blustery northerly;; ',:Tho rain held.off during tho day, but towards even ing the wind lnllcel, and the.rain came with tho gathering dark- ■ ness, and remained for another dawn— th-s'dawn of Christmas Day. Holiday-makers, as they surveyed .the prospect in- the morning, saw a. watery sky, and drifting cloud banks,- and prepared .' to .modify their .' programmes. There was no nioro rain, till about;fivc o'clopk in tho evening, when it camo down' in-earnest, and rained and-rained, nnd rained. The Government Meteorologist (the Kev. D. C Bates) is as optimistic as ho darc.be. He says "the glasswill rise-soon"—but not tiltwo have had strong Westerly, winds, veering to- the south, with colder weather'generally. '■
