EOUQH, YEEY. WAIEORA USES Oil/ BAGS. After a tempestuous passage, the Union Company s collier Waihora arrived at n elmigton from Newoastle yesterday. Tho vessel struck tho storm which tho Warrimoo encountered on her last trip from kyoney to w.2lhni»ton. The steamer left Newcastle oil Fridav, December 15, and, from 4 p.m. on the foilowmp day, a heavy south-west caJe, accompamcd by mountaiaoue B3as, raped until she was ncaring tho New Zoalrind coast. On Sunday morning; a tremendous sea came on board and, in its career, it carried away part of tho lower brideo, ana a gangway, smashed the bulwarks for some distance, and practically flooded the vessel. Sea after sea then cam? on board witli rather alarming suddenness, and oil had to be resorted to. Meanwhile the Waihora was hov3-to for 10 hours. At 6 p.m. the vessel was put on her course again, out still the seas came over her. and carried away—more deok gear, and again the *2ssel was hove-to.. All this time the decks'were continually awash, and everything which was not secured went overboard. The etorm abated for a few hours after midnight on Monday, -but on the following evening heavy weather was met with, and more water was shipped. These conditions prevailed until Stephen Island was' passed, and, much to the relief of all on board, tho waihora made port -without further mishap. A glance over tho veesel as she lies at her berth at the Railway Wharf afforded evidence of the rough handling which she had received on her eight day's run across. The \7aihora was decnly la?on, and this accounts for her receiving such a buffeting. Mr. R. Wood, assistant-nurser of 'the Pateena, has joined the Ma.raroa in a similar capacity, vice Mr. Rule, who is ashore on sick leave. Captain Mauley, master of the Chatham Islands steamsr Himitangi, tis about to retire from seafaring life for n. few pionths prior to taking charge of • Messrs. Levin and Co.'s new steamer, which is dne from Home about the 2nd of April. 1912. For many years Captain Manley has been a well-known figure in the Ndv: Zealand coastal trade. Captain J, 0. Cowan, late mate of the Himitangi. Ip nor? in chare.a of the vessel, and Mr! H. M'lntyro is mate. An' early arrival in nort from Castlepoint this morning will be the Government steamer Hiromoa. Early on Wertnosday morning the vnssel will Icavn Wellington to overhaul the buoys at Frcnch Pass, and Queen Charlotto and -Pelorus Sounds. She will return to Wellington, and l»ave attain about January 6 on her .periodical trip to southern lighthouses. Yesterdny morning the. auxiliary scow Echo arrived at Lyttelton from Karamea. Mapourika, s.s., left Westport for' Wellington, via Nelson, at 11 a.:ai. yesterday. She leaves the lost-mentioned port for Wellington direct at 7 a.m.,to-day, and is du3 in port about 4 p.m. At midnight to-night the coastal steam- . er Blenheim will leave Wellington with passengors for Blenheim. The Opawa also leaves port for Blsnheira to-night. • An expected, arrival at Port Chalmers next week is.the F.-U.-S. steamor Norfolk. Tho vessel "is dns at Wellington ; on- December 30, and leaves here finally for Avonmoiith, via Las Palmas, on January 3. At a late hour last night the Chatham Islands Fishing Company's steainsr Himitangi loft Wellington' for tho Chathains. She will discharge stores at Owenga, and proceed thenco to Waitangi to pick up a full load of wool for Lyttelton before returning to Wellington. , Early this morning; the New Zealand Shipping Company's steamer Opawa leaves Wellington for Auckland. Home loading v/itl be commenced, at the"northern nort, arid subsequently the vessel will visit Tokomaru BayV Gisborne, Napier, and-Welling- • ton. ' | Upon completion of discharge at Napior i tho Landerdale will go-to Kaipara to load for Melbourne.
