NOTES AND COMMENTS, CBi Glenooe.] ' The looally-owned ■ Emma will see a very short price in both hack sprint races at Taratahi on Boxing Day. She will not have Lady Laddo to worry her as was the case at Opaki, and, in addition to this, the circular track at Clarevillo will be all in favour of a good beginner like tho Conqueror filly. On her form behind Lady Laddo in the Dash Hack at Opaki, Amber and White should start favourite in the Trial Plate at Clareville on Tuesday. Mr. C, F. Vallance's filly is likely to be much improved after the race on Thursday. Tie Trentham trainer, J. W. Lowe; is having a prolonged spell of ill-fortnne, and,, during the Christmas season, ho will be without a horse to race. It was his intention to take Effort and Mira.to the Manawatu mooting, but both aro unable to make the trip. The former is suffering from a coltl, and the grey colt is sore. . Owing to' her victories at Feilding and Masterton, tho Foxton mare Lady Laddo is now ineligible for the Trial Stakes at Awapuni. Thsv Dunedin Jockey Club's meeting opens on Tuesday next. Battle royal is expected between the two three-year-olds, Miscount and Counterfeit, in tho Auckland Cup. In wellinformed circles, the general opinion is that tho last-named filly will carry the. colours of Sir Geo. Clifford, though others ; profess to believe that the Chokebore sportsman will' start both his representatives, and this supposition is' borne out by the fact that C. Emerson declined to rido Midnight Sun. On the ' weight : for-age scale, Counterfeit has all the worst of the weights, and it will be no surprise to find the Karamu colt finishing in front of her, but, whether he will win or not, is another matter. There is not the slightest doubt that he is a good colt, but many good judges contend that he is at the wrong game, and should be sprinting only. In this connection it may be pointed out that he was timed to run the first six furlongs of the' Stead Cup under lmin. Usee. One. of the best , stayers in tho Auckland Cup is last years winner Waimangu. Tho Soult—Roxana, horse is solid all through, and, in Auckland, he is gTeatly fancied for tho big race on Boxing Day. Nothing certain is known as to the intentions of his owner in regard to a rider for Tuesday's race, but it is generally understood that F. D. Jones will have tho mount. C. Jenkins was offered the mount on Miscount in tho Auckland Cup, but ho had to refuso it'as he had oagaged for Mendip in the same race just two hours prior to receiving tho wiro from Karamu. Tho Southland-owned gelding Erl King, by Birkenhead, carrying 7st. 31b., was amongst the starters for the December Plate (six furlongs) at the Moonee Valley (Vic.) meeting on December 6, but finished outside a place. Erl Ki'ng will be more at home when faced with hurdles on some of Melbourne's suburban tracks in the near future. Golden Webb is the namo which the Southland sportsman, Mr. S. Fraser, has bestowed on the North Island-bred filly by Captain Webb, from Wild Daisy. The Martian horse, Soldiers' Chorn>, has reachod Wingatui from Rivorton, to fulfil his engagements at the forthcoming meeting of tho Dunclin Jockey Club. Writing to a Melbourne paper a oor*.respondent states i—"lt may interest your
readers to know that up to now there are 35 youDg horses by Canteen (son of Castor and winner of the New Zealand Cup in 1903) on King Island. Cantoen is grey in colour, but his progeny are mostly bays with black points. These foals possess magnificent bono and substance. The value of the King Island Cup, run each New Year's Day, has been increased from five dozen wallaby, skins (ten years ago) to .£25." Weights for the first day's events at the Wellington Eacing Club's mooting are due on January 5. Crucinella, who has been in Melbourne for some considerable time, was brought back to New Zealand yesterday by the Huddart-Parker steamer TJlimaroa. MANAWATU CUP MEETING. ' The Manawatu Eacing Club's Summer c ? r £i opoD3 on Boxing Day on the club s beautiful course at Awapuni. Principal interest will centre in the Cup race, for which a large hold is promised. The meeting will bo continued on Wodnesday. when the Palraerston North Stakes will be run, and it will be concluded on Fri-day-next. On Boxing Day, a special tram will leave Wellington, for the racecourse at 7.10 a.m., while arrangements nave been made for the New.Plymouth and Napier expresses and the Wangamii relief mail to stop at Awapuni. . The -gathering should be well patronised by city sportsmen..- . TARATAHI-CARTERTON RACES. The Taratahi-Ca-rterton Eacing Club's Boxing Bay meeting at Clareville promises to be largely patronised by local racegoers. Good fields of horses of a fair class are engaged, and by the form displayed at Jlasterton on Thursday last some light has been thrown on prospective winners. Several absentees from the JUastertpn meeting will be seen at Clareville, these including British Maid, Sinapis. First Battery, and Longstep. Interesting racing should result, and the future should prove the same pleasant puling for Wellington visitors which it has proved m the past. The club's secretary, Mr. J. B. Bairstow, notifies that return railway tickets are obtainable from is. lid. Excursion trains will leave Lambton Station at 6.37 a.m. and 8.40 a.m., and will leave the racecourse at o.M p.m. on the Tetnrn journey, HUTT VALLEY TROTS. Local followers of tTotting will he catered for on Tuesday next, when the annual meeting of the Hutt Valley Trotting Club takes place at the Petone Eecreation Ground. Prominent performers from all parts of the Dominion will be among the competitors, and the club's patrons can look forward to a capital day's sport. The first rare is timed to start at 12.30 p.m. Special train arrangements are announced-in the shape of a half-hourly service. There will be a totalisator at the meeting, under the management of Mr. J,. Ames. ELLERSLIE NOTES, IBy Teleerauh-Presg Association.! Auokland, December 22.
