PACIFIC CABLE.
AUTHORISATION OF NEW LINE. By 'telegraph—Press Association—Copyright Melbourne, December 19. In the Federal House of Representatives, Mr. Eraser, Postmaster-General, introduced a Bill to authorise the Pacific Cable Board to construct a direct cablo between Australia and New Zealand. Ho said it only rested with Australia to completo authorisation, which was a matter of urgency, the duplication of tho cablo being necessary to obviate delays through tho breakdown of tho present line via Norfolk Island. Mr. Fisher, Prime Minister, said he bad heard that something was being done ii} connection with a State-owned Atlantic cable, which might be expected, but the Commonwealth was in the hands of the British Government in the matter. Tho Bill was passed through all its stages.
