The Arts and Crafts Club of Palmerston hold a ■'social" at tho Technical School last evening, when (he social gallery was prettily decorated for the occasion. There was a largo iitrnrlancc of members and their friends, and Ihe president, 3fr. G. 11. Kiliott, presided. During the evening a programme of vocal anil instrumental nnisic was rendered, anil supper was provided by the ladies. Tho "social" was organised by tho lion', secretary of the club, Sirs. Powell. Tho "break up" of Hiss Stanford's Kindergarten Scnoul ;on]; place ycslerdaj afternoon, when sha was the recipient of a handsome presentation from her little pupils. It is understood Miss Stanford is , leaving Paimerslon, having arranged to join her sister in similar work at New Plymouth. J'ellit; district warden, Hro. W. L. Rockstrow. Bro. ]■). Cleveley (Himiiythorpe Lodge) was nominated for the position of Provincial D.G.M. Bros. Eyre, Pettit, Jlowlem, Dudley, Haycock, and Matheson v were elected a Hall, and Building Committee. Votes of condolence were passed to Bro. J. Scheidjt-on account of tho death of his (laughter, Mrs. Beckman, and tu Mrs. Kssex, on account of the death of her husband, Bro. R. Essex. December 18. At the Police Court to-day, a man named Edmund Burke, against whom thpre were a number of previous convicJiontf, was.sentenced to fourteen days' imprisonment for- stealing a woman's skirl. The final figures in> connection with tho licensing poll" after tho recount on Saturday are as follow:—Continuance, 3179; No-License. 3113; against Dominion Prohibition hSIS; for Dominion Prohibition, 3710. At the invitation of the I'a.xmill Union tho millers met a deputation from tho union to- discuss the question of wages and conditions for flax cutters in Jlanawatu. The matter was fully discussed, and it is oxnocted that the question in dispute will be settled amicably, the employers on tho. one ; fide and the union on "the other having to be consulted belurc a final agreement is come to. The annual concert of the Campbell ■Ureet School will lake place on Friday evening next. This school "breaks up" a week later than the other public schools in the town. The formation of a Swimming Club in Pnlmerston has been taken in hand by feveral enthusiasts., and it is probable that a strong club will shortly be iucnuurated. The funeral of the lab Mr. Richard Essex took place on Saturday afternoon, and was largely attended, amon.!; those resent being & number of borough councillors and ex-Mayors of the town. The fuiiora! service was conducted by the I'ev. H. G. Roscher at All Snints' Church nnd at the graveside, after which the Mn.-fluie funeral service was rendered bv W.M. Bro. A. .1 Graham, of lluia Lod?e, assisted bv several members of the craft, including the lddge choir.
