SECOND DAY'S PLAY. LONG SCORE FOR ENGLAND TO CATCH. ! TRUMPER'S CENTURY. MINNETT AS A HARD HITTEII. Ily Tolcgraph— PrcES Association—Copyright (lice. December 17, 0.50 p.m.) Sydnoy, December 1G The first Test Mutch—Australia v. M. CO.—was resumed to-day. Tlm weather was hot, and <i strong, gusty wind blow clouds of dust across Iho ground. Tho attendance numbered 115,0011, and tho "gate" amounted to jtfltti. Minuett and Trumpet resumed batting, uud faced Barnes and Foster. Mi.nnett played brilliantly, and was loudly cheered for hitting threo fours off one over by Poster, all placed differently. Trumpor at this ktago was extremely cautious, owing to his close proximity to the century, which ho eventually brought up by beautifully sticking I'ostcr through the slips to the boundary. His inuings so far had occupied 130 minutes, and had been tnarkod by eound and careful cricket. Miunett's fifty ■ appoared 49 minutes later, and, simultaneously, tho total of 350 for 302 minutes' play was hoisted. Foster was expensive with Iho ball, 28 runs coming off four ovens. Those wcro mostly put oa by Micnctt. Woolloy took the ball, and, in his first over, Minnott lifted one in tho direction of uiidoff, and Douglas reached it, but was unable to hold it. At 378 Douglas w.is put on to bowl, vice Barne3. When ho had scored 113, Trumper hit out at Woolley, hut mis-hit, and Hobbs, at cover-point, brought off a good eaten. Trumper had batted for 22G minutes, and his score included twelve fours. Hβ gave no chances, and his partnership with Minnctt added 109 runs. Minnett brought the Australian total to 100 with a dangerous euick thromgh the slips in the directiou of Foster, who had just moved from the spot, and the ball travelled to tho boundary. The innings had now been in progress for :Jl7 minutes. Hordern was nest man in, Miunett unfortunately getting out just before liuncheon, Foster brilliantly taking him ]ow in tho slips off Barnes. Ho scored his 90 in brilliant style, and was at tho wickets for 111 minutes. His total included fourteen fours. Cotter should havo been run cut at once, but Douglas threw at the wjekets, and tho shot went for four. A few,, balls later, however, Barnes caught and bowled him. Carter followed, and was also missed when ho had mado two, Hobbs failing to tako him nt point, off Barnes. Aftor scoring 13, however, I'oster clean bowled him. Foster's first wicket had cost 105 run , ,. Nest ball ho clean bowled Whitty, arid the innings closed fo~ 447. It had lasted 385 minutes. The English fielding ranged from fair to good. Hobb3 and Kinaeir opened tho batting for tho Englishmen, the attack being emtrusted to Cotter and Whitty. ffobbs scored seven, and Kinneir ono off tho first over, but Hobbs should have been out when he had scored Six, as he cut a fast one to Macartney, who was fielding at point, as substitute for Trumper. Macartney, however, fumbled tho catch. Trurnpor was suffering from an injured, knee, having been struck by a fast ball from Barnes shortly before ho was out. Horderu replaced Cotter at 35, and apparently his deliveries had Hobbs badly mixed. Eelloway bowled at the other end. Both tho Englishmen batted steadily. Kinneir scored 22 chiefly by clean carpet drives, and then Kelloway bowled down his middlo stump with a perfect length off-break. Gunn joined Hobbs with his injured hand still bound up. Cotter's fast deliveries appeared to disconcert him, and ho was clean bowled at four. Khodes was next in, and opened his account by cutting Cottei for four. Hobba still plaj-ed soundly, and, having in view Australia's big total, took no lisks, but he brought off one splendid stroke for five. Rhodes was moro free, rutting and driving cleanly. Bowling changes were freqnent, nnd Hobbs gave a chance at 39, when he lifted Hordern to mid-on, but Cotter failed to ■effect a catch which came nt him shoulder high. A four by Rhodes brought up tho 100 after 119 minutes' play. Rhodes played freely to Hordern, and scored quickly, but, at 41, ho mishit a "googlj'" to Hill at point, and was held. - Ho had batted for 39 minutes, and showed splendid eric-, £et. Tho partnership added 62. With half an hour to go, Mead joined Hobb?, who reached SO by tho aid of an overthrow (o the boundary by Kelleivn.y whilo running a short one. He had been at tho wicket for 139.minutes. Tho nn.wcomer was unable to play Hordern, and j presently hit ono weakly buck to tlio i bowler, which the latter caught as it touched the ground. Two balls later ho made a similar stroke, and, this time, ho was cleanly taken. Hearno and Hobbs then played out time. Australia.—First Innings. Kelleway, c. and b. Woolley 20 Bardslcy, c.
