Mr. Spencer Lorraine, (ho well-known Ihi'lish specialist in vcico production and interpretation, is a visitor to Wellington. Joachim, managing director of the Y\ cstjiort Coal Company, left Wellington for Wc-tport by the Navua on {■■jturtliiy evening. The funeral of the late Mr. Thos. Stewart, who was for many years a resident of iv'cwtown, took place yesterday afternoon, and was attended by many' friends of the deceased gentleman. The death occurred at. Masterton on Saturday morning at the age of 77 years of Mr. .lames Kwington, a very old'resident, of that township. Ho was for mauy years in business as a blacksmith and wheelwright. News has been received in Masterfon from Auckland of the death of Mr. Cornelius Dixon, who was u farmer in the Maslcrtou district for a number of year*. Sir John Kirk, secretary lo the Ragged Schools Union and tho Shaftesbury Society, London, arrived at Aucklnnd by the Main Trunk express on ■Saturday. Hammonds, a member of tho staff of the Ilawera County Uloetric Company, and who for the past, seven months has been in charge of tho powerhouse, has been appointed to a responsible position with Thos. Mr. diaries Earlo, Editor of The DominioN) was tho guest of the evening at a complimentary dinner which was tendered him at the Hotel Windsor on Saturday evening by tho members of tho Literary and Iteadiug Staffs and tho heads of tho various departments of the paper. Tho gathering wn.s .1 thoroughly enjoyable one. Mr. M. C. Koano, Asiist-iiut-J'Mitor, was in the chair, and in proposing tho toast of tho guest, remarked on the part which Tub Dominion had played in assisting to purify the public life of the country. Mr. L'arle, in responding, expressed his deep appreciation of the splendid loyalty of the stall' which had enabled the paper to successfully combat the powerful influences arrayed against it. The musical portion of the programme, consisted of gramaphone selections (instrument kindly lent by Beggs, Limited).
