Captain Holmes, of the Union Company's service, returned from Sydney by the Moana, yesterday.

Captain Jolm Williams, ono of the oldest anu most widely-known navigators in the South Sea Islands aiid Singapore trades, died last week in a private hospital in .Sydney at the ago o{ 64 years. He was born in Lnjland, and adopted a seafaring career when only 13 years old. After serving his time in sailing ships. Captain Williams went into steam, and entered the Australian merchant service at the age of 23 or 24. His first engagement, with Burns, Philp and Co., Ltd.. was in 1893, and he remained in the eervicc of that firm until the end. He commanded, among other steamers, the Titus and Moresby in the island trade, and the Airtie, Guthrie, and Mataram in the Java-Singapore trade. Ho was regarded as ii particularly cautions navigator, and neither lost a steamer nor met with a serious accident during the whole term of his service.
