MB. ALAN WALLACE. Of AUCKLAND, Mr. Alan Wallace, of Auckland University College, has been selected as Hie Now Zealand Rhodes Scholar for 1912. The candidates nominated by the four University centres were: Messrs. Alnn Wallace (Auckland), Frederick George Hall-Jones (Wellington), Lancelot Shadwell Jennings (Canterbury), and Montague Ongley (Otaga). Mr. Alan AYallaeo, tho selected candidate, is the fourth Rhodes scholar from Auckland during tho last iive ycary, and is the youngest student yet. selected to represent, tlw Dominion, being- not yet twenty-one. He was .}\,m in Auckland in April, IS9I, entered Auckland Grammar School as a, jj'oumiatiun Scholar in J-'ebnmry, 190 M,' and lie had a brilliant career at tli'e s-chool, winning many prizes, chienY i u mathematics, science, and liiiittuages. 110 won a senior district KcholajriM,,, ami a senior national scholarship, .and h, ](jO7 a junior university scholarship, in which he was second in fto Dominion. At Auckland University' College, he won the .Sir George Gre,\ "Scholarship in chemistry, mathe.ii.'4iic.s and astronomy, and three .Senior ■University Scholarships in pure imithematics, mechanics, and chemistry. He took his B.A. in 1010, and sat. for honours in November last in mathematics and chemistry. .In colleco examinations he took first place in mathematics, mechanics, and chemistry respectively, and third pla.co in Latin and French. In the field of athletics i(: is chielly as a cricketer (hat tho successful candidate is distinguished. He represented Auckland province last season, and had the second highest batting average in Hie Auckland district. Ho has also played Association football. He has also played n leading part in his college life, being secretary and president of tho Students' Association, and president of tho Men's Common Room Club.
